Height/Weight of 2 year old... should I worry?

I have just measured and weighed DD (27 months to be precise!) at home for the first time in absolutely ages, she is 23lbs and only 80cm. I had a quick look at the growth charts and it puts her on 2nd centile for height and between 2nd and 9th for weight.

She hasn't had any developmental checks since she was tiny as they don't seem to do them in my area and I have no concerns about her, she walked before 12months, chats away, seems to compare well to her peers at nursery.

She eats very well and whilst she is small she is not skinny iyswim, she's well covered with chubby little cheeks. Would you raise this with your GP? Is there anything I should be worried about?

I am not small in either respect and neither is her Dad so god knows where she gets it from if she is just petite...

Are her grandmothers petite?

I am tall (5'8"), but DD is quite petite - 3rd shortest girl in her year group? - must take after her grandma's who are 5' and 4'8"

DD walked at 10 months and is quite sporty, so I don't think it's a problem.

Doesn't sound like there's anything to worry about - if she's on the same centile for both height and weight then she's in proportion and just being on the centile charts shows that she's 'normal'

(love how I can say this to you quite calmly as DD had her 1 year check yesterday and measured as being on the 2nd centile for weight, height and head. Far from being reassured that she's 'small but perfectly formed' I spent all night worrying)

Actually yes BTM, my mum isn't but her paternal grandmother is quite small and very slim, she must get it from her. Can't think why I didn't think about that!

Ah mrsjuan, I think it's natural to worry a little bit about these things but there are definite positives... her clothes and shoes have lasted AGES! Someone has to be the bottom end of the spectrum right?!

Exactly - in fact when we had the hot weather at the weekend I dug out some summer clothes that were bought for her last year (far too big then) that I'd put away because I'd thought she'd surely have grown out of them by this year - hey presto she has 3 outfits that fit perfectly - size 3-6months!

Glad you solved the mystery of who she takes after.

I am fairly small (but never as small as she is / has been) but apparently DH's mum was a very small baby and child
(now short and fat but I won't think about that )

DS2 is exactly 2 years (24 months) and is 21 lb 11 oz (about 9.8-ish kg) and when he last had his height checked (about a month ago) was 81 cm. He also started walking at 12 months, chatters away and even started counting last week! I don't think there's anything wrong developmentally, just a problem putting on weight.

In your case your dd's height and weight are in proportion and some people are very tiny as children but catch up later. In all probability she's fine.

Woohoo! Me too, DS3 also measured 2nd percentile at 27 months. "Titchy", "petite", "shrimp" sausage face, we hear them all.

DS1 (now 10yo) was even smaller at same age. Recently he was at an event with peers and I realised that he was the tallest of the boys there; so I measured him 2 weeks ago, and according to the red book he is now 50th percentile for height.

Quite amusing, really .
