Hi, I'm new to mums net so ill start by introducing myself. I'm 29 and i have one daughter who is 21 months.

I'm looking for some advice on biting!
My Daighter seems to be set on bioting other children. Sometimes as a result of not wantin g to share but also sometimes just for no reason at all.
So far she has biten twice whilst with me. The first time she got in a scuffle whilst playing and she bit and the second time she just bit a boy of similar age for no apparent reason.
Each time i have lead her away and sat her down away from the play areas and told her that she has been very naughty. I've made her sit there for a couple of minutes before saying sorry to me and to whoever she has biten.
If this was working i would probably not be as worried but she just seems to go back and try to do it again!

I'm finding myself in a situation where i'm hovering over her which seems to make matters worse but at the same time i don't want her to keep biting other children.

Can anyone offer me some advice on this?

Thanks

We had a similar problem with our DD at a similar age. It started off quite slowly, but soon whenever we got together with baby friends, she would go straight for them. It took time, and loads of patience, but eventually after trying many many different techniques, and when we were just on the point of avoiding all social gatherings, this worked.

  • explained to her that biting hurt.
  • explained that if she wanted to let someone know that she wasn't happy about something, hurting them was not the most effective method of getting her own way.
  • watched her like a hawk, and the second she was about to stick her teeth in, put her own arm in front of her first.

I still don't know how I managed it, but she sank her teeth in to her own arm, it hurt like hell, and she never ever tried it again.

We've just had her P6 (Yr 5) report card, and she is described as a confident leader and negotiator. So I think it worked!

Hope this helps. It did take lots of help and intervention, but at 21 months, you just know you are unhappy with a situation, and probably need a little help to work out how to deal with it.

Thank you, thats really useful and i will try it. Its so frustrating as i think im getting to the stage where i'm not wanting to take her out. Sometimes she will be an angel but others she is just a horror!
Ill keep you posted
Thanks
