Just a thought. My LO sometimes(as in once or twice a day) has trouble when doing a poo. She screaches during a nappy change as I wait for her to finish. This has been the case since the start and the Nursery nurse said it was cos she was breast fed and it's normal...But her screams are screaching and it is very sad when it happens. She seems horrified. Is this normal???

How old is she? Mine never screeched, more a red faced air of concentration.

Obviously babies are all different, what are you feeding her?

Fifilottie · 26/05/2010 09:52

She's 12 weeks but 4 and half weeks early so adjusted age is 7 and half weeks.

I,m just breastfeeding her. Not sure why is hurts her so much :-(

Does she get really upset and take time to comfort, in which case I'd check with the GP, or does she quieten down immediately?

I wouldn't be happy about it either.

what do the stools look like darkish and hard obviously could be a problem mid brown softish then there is another problem do go and see your DR. ASAP good luck

My wee one also has pain when pooing - lots of grumbling or crying, wants to feed but pulls off after a few mins. He was also early and underdeveloped. I have askedcountless health visitors about it and the gp - they all say that if he's gaining weight and poo is soft and yellow then it's not a problem you need to worry about. At nearly 20 weeks he has improved - he had awful wind too which really bothered him. But I really sympathise - it's very upsetting and frustrating. He would cryfor ages, especially if it was when he was tired. Bedtime was awful.

Thank you. I thought my DD was the only one. She is also very windy.I always resort to constant feeding or confort sucking at bedtime(I know....bad habit, but last resort). Luckily have just got her off but it has taken over an hour...which is good!!!! Am going to the Doctors anyway tomorrow as she has had a particulary painful and pooey day and thought it worth a check, for my own sanity. ..thanks to all and will let how it all goes....Ps I was told that it would pass aswell....I hope so, I feel so sorry for her and there is nothing I can do to soothe her

So, went to the Dr..I think she thinks I am one of those over paraniod mummys although I really really am not. She said the same things as those said to "hangiontherebaby", so I guess me and mine must just do that.....surely there is some reason for it. Wind perhaps......any ideas?

is there any possibility that your baby doesn't like/tolerate the milk you are giving her??? if you have a reaction it can affect your gut and poo going. I have diverticulitis and when I have a bout pooing.......... very uncomfortable. babies are only small humans after all. try soy milk for babies, both mine were reared on it. then no probs. good luck

Fifilottie · 28/05/2010 18:15

I'm breastfeeding her, which took much perseverence as she was in hospital for the first tne days so would be gutted to give it up. May be it's my diet but I eat well!!!....and she has been like this from the start.

Are you taking iron tablets for anaemia? When I did, it leached into my breast milk and caused constipation with ds (he was about 12 weeks).

People were always telling me not to drink alcohol as it got into breast milk so I wonder if you eating dried figs or similar would help by changing the makeup of your milk.

fairimum · 30/05/2010 15:35

SIL had the sme problem with her DS and DD (both prem) - until she cut out all dairy from her diet... turn out was just down to their tummies not being mature enough to tolerate/digest the lactose in the milk... her DS is still lactose intolerant but her DD was fine with it by 6 months! Maybe worth a try?

ChurchFarmHouse · 31/05/2010 20:19

I really feel for you - what a nightmare. Could it be that your baby has a dairy intolerance, or something that you are eating perhaps? You could try goats milk instead for a while (and goats cheese etc) all very easy to get in the supermarkets. Also, are you eating enough fruit and veg in your diet to pass on?

Fifilottie · 02/06/2010 08:15

Thanks for all your advice. Just in the past two days things seem to have gone normal. Still a bit of a screach when she poos but things seemed to have solidified. I haven't cut out anything from my diet as yet and am just keeping my fingers crossed that she is ok now!!! Will see, if things go back to the same as before will maybe try cutting out milk and cheese.....however don't eat/drink either much!!!!! At the moment am just struggling with one of those 12 week growth spurts...oh dear :-)
