What did your babies enjoy playing 6m+?

There was a great list around a while ago, and I can't find it.

DS is almost 6 months, can sit up pretty well on his own, enjoys reaching for and holding objects, loves mirrors and books (mainly chewing corners and attempting to grab hold of pictures) and he loves bashing things. He likes to bring things into and then out of focus.

I have a 3yo, who, at this age, mostly enjoyed trying to walk. That was her sole ambition in life, to get mobile so we bought some toys we thought she would like but she was just not interested.

There is so much I could buy, but I don't want to just buy things I like the look of, or because it is in a sale, or because the item says it is ok for 6m+. I would like some recommendations of favourite toys, or perhaps not even toys, but household things that your babies loved.

I don't want to spend a lot, just some inspiration for things to engage and help him develop.

Oh, and I already have on the list, or in the house:

plastic stacking cups
we are buying a ride on, as DDs broke and she was using it to get herself up with by 7m but DS is probably too young for it.
rattles of various sizes
boxes of various sizes
his favourite toy right now is a large chunk of duplo lego, which I change the colour of the confuse him from time to time.
some toy animals on those pullies that you pull back and they go bbbbbrrrrrrrr back. You know what I mean.

stacking cups were a winner for dd1 for months and months
stacking rings
dd2 loves:
rattles
a ball from mothercare that goes 'boing' when you bat it
books to chew
a big dragon toy that sits as tall as her with crinkly bits and rattly bits, etc.
chewy teething keys

a treasure basket
hours and hours of play for the sitting baby

google heuristic play

BabbatheHun · 25/05/2010 20:54

oh serengeti I am off to google!

Sounds like I pretty much have everything he needs then, maybe just a couple more cardboard books?

I wondered if there were any kind of 'wow i want one of those' kind of things but there isn't really is there? He is still only a baby after all!

Oh yes we did that with DD. She was particularly fond of boxes, she would put things in, and throw things out of boxes. That was mainly what she did, moved and dumped things from boxes.

She loves putting things in and taking them out of boxes even now (including herself).

That'll be why DS loves the duplo so much already.

a multi pack of various sized tuperwares - from argos for about £10. The bext £10 I have ever spent.

womblingfree · 26/05/2010 23:34

Big shiny silver helium balloon with a bell as a weight on the end of the ribbon. Will cost about 3 quid and provide noise, bouncing and a reflection to look at - my daughter loved them from when she was tiny!

womblingfree · 26/05/2010 23:36

Another thing - if/when your DS can sit confidently - grab a load of household bits that you can chuck in the bath or a bowl and see which ones float and sink - fascinating even at a young age

mistressploppy · 27/05/2010 14:21

I got something a bit like this from a jumble sale and ds just loves it. It's great because he can sit up and bash it. Also the unbiquitous Sophie Giraffe - always a winner. Looks, tastes, feels, sounds and smells very distinctive; great sensory stuff!

BabbatheHun · 27/05/2010 15:30

AH yes, sophie the giraffe! Or, gerald as we might call him

A shape sorter. DS was mostly just bashing the shapes together or chewing on them at that stage but he loved it. And when he got older, he progressed into putting the shapes in.

The Tomy Hide and Squeak Eggs were also a huge hit at that age. Brilliant for bashing and chewing!

Or JimmytheGiraffe.

He is the sponsor of Nov 09 thread. Especially as we had lunch in Giraffe in London too.
