Ok I have a few questions for u......

Ds will be 2 in July and we have noticed he has flat feet. Today at my DDs Gp apointment I mentioned this to the dr and she watched him walking.... She said he deffo has flat feet and he walks crossing his feet that tbh ive never really noticed!! (bad mum ) and hes started walking on his tip toes alot. She told me to take him to see health visitor and now im a bit worred he loves to jump around and dance so Ive never seen it as a problem. Should I be worred?? x

Not sure re your question in particular but not sure a health visitor is right person tbh-they are likely to refer you back to the GP!! May be worth seeing a physio or paediatrician though just to check stuff out. Lots of children are flat footed and atand on tip toe and I know if it becomes persistant a physio can usually sort out the problem.

I agree, the paediatrician would be a more logical referral. Perhaps pop back to the GP and ask or your HV can refer you.

Flat feet are quite common before the arch forms. Tiptoes could be a sign of tight hamstrings which may need physio. Doesn't sound like it is holding him back in any way tho.

HV might be best starting point if referral is needed.

I probably wouldn't bother with HV if she's not helped so far. GP sounds a bit lazy, I'd reccomend seeing a different one if you're that concerned.

DD is 3.5 and has 'special boots'. She has flat feet (with no archwhatsoever), her knees are now bowed inwards and her right foot/leg turns inwards. She has hypermobility (extreeeeeemely flexible joints, can rotate her legs almost 360!) and hypotonia (low muscle tone). She tip toes too. She see's physio, who are largely happy because she is still capable of doing everything she needs to, allbeit slowly and only capable sometimes for a few minutes. We have some excercises to do. She also sees a guy at the Orthotics department in the hospital for her boots. Flat footedness is very common for youngsters and one of the lesser things for us to be worried about with DD, although to me I worry it about it quite alot due to how her feet actually sit, which in turn makes her knees bow in!

It's very easy to worry about their feet and their walking, so if you are worried ask to be referred properly - he is only little though

Sorry, my lengthy detail of DD there was to show how I understand and my experience of this... didn't realise I'd whittled on so long!

I have sever over pronation - so have an arch but when I walk my foot completely collapses in on itself. I can tell you that my right knee is so so painful. I now have insoles for mys hsoes and a slight build up insert and my life has changed. But, when I first saw NHS podiatrist she said to watch my son as it can be heridtry but that they won't do anything about it until they are 5. I have to say mind you she didn't do a great job with me and I ended up having fantastic (paid for) service at the university. I knwo if you have a uni that offers that, you can take your children too. My son does have the same problem, although looks milder than mine at the minute and he does not complain of sore legs yet at 2.8. I think I will take him somewhere soon though, I don't really know what your HV can do?

maxybrown · 24/05/2010 21:23

that would be SEVERE mot sever

Mumof2x · 27/05/2010 17:50

Thanks for all your advice :D

Saw HV today and she said to wait untill his 2year check in a few weeks and let them see his walking/running and they should refer him as his left foot is odd looking and no more trainers xx
