18mo hand flapping when excited...

DD has done this since she could sit up- she sits rigidly and balances on her bum (abs of steel) whilst her legs straighten and kick and hands sort of make little circles when she is excited. Mostly by In the Night Garden

Thing is, I have no experience of toddlers and the only time I have seen this behaviour is in children with ASD whom I have taught.

Does/Did anyone else's DC do this? Is it anything to be concerned about?

lots of NT kids do this and grow out of it.

Have you got any other concerns about development?

She's not walking yet, but otherwise unconcerned as she is speaking loads and has dual attention, imaginative play etc...

We have a referral for the lack of walking- GP thought it may be hypermobility.

tethersend DS went through a phase of doing this and is coming out of it now that he has taught himself to jump (almost!).

I wouldn't worry about it, it sounds incredibly cute

developmental checks will hopefully put your mind at rest - dd2 is hypermobile and some other stuff (she has cp), but in isolation i wouldn't worry.

it's quite common with excitement.

it's a perfectly normal human reaction!

mum2oneloudbaby · 23/05/2010 22:21

dd did this before she could walk. she spent ages balancing on her bottom (wish my abs were that strong ). Once she started walking it stopped, she never really crawled so she did it for quite sometime.

DD did this a lot, it sort of transferred over into jumping up and down at about 2 - 2.5.
Apparently DH used to do it too...

Thanks for replying.

I am pleased to realise that I am just doing my usual PFB panic- get it about every 3 months at the moment

Great to hear that it sounds completely normal
