Speech and language - 2.2yo

DS is 2.2 yo. He has recognised all the letters in the alphabet since about 20mo, and has been able to say them properly, including phonetic sounds, for about 2 months. But, when he's talking/repeating a word, he doesn't seem to be able to sound the letters in a word properly.

For example, when he's counting, he says "one, pwo, wree". I tried getting him to say the sound, then the word, but this resulted in "tuh, pwo. Th, wree".

Is this normal? I am assuming (and hoping!) that as his speech develops he will just "get" how the sounds go together, but it's just so odd how he knows and can make the sounds of the letters, but not when they're together in a word.

Any experiences/advice greatly appreciated!

Yes, perfectly normal. My daughter is 2.1. I love all her mistakes - in fact I use them as my passwords at work! Glubs (gloves, nocolate (chocolate), mickets (biscuits), etc. I have a 4.6 DS too, who was exactly the same and now talks very well, but has a few sounds he is still trying to master - he still says breakbrest for breakfast. I have no worries though as he talks non-stop so gets plenty of practice!

Thanks Effjay. It is really cute. I suppose the key is not to repeat what he says, but repeat the word as it should be to try to instill it. He certainly gets a lot of practise, always chatting to himself or giving us a commentary on what he can see!

Good idea re the passwords! I might pinch that idea for DH, not likely to be guessed by anyone are they??

DS has that problem, with being able to pronounce all phonics seperately but not together. He can't say blue (says Ba)but when you think about it, it's very hard to articulate the sound BL. What you have to do is repeat the right way and they will end up imitating you. eventually.
