Colic/wind

My baby girl is 6 weeks old and suffers terribly from colic/wind.
The reason being is that she is a very hungry baby. She drinks very quickly depsite using slow flow teats and as a result of this she is sick when I try to wind her and is always being sick! (I wind her a few times during her feed). She is very difficult to wind and I have tried infacol and gripe water (to no avail) and found that dentinox works the best out of the 3 but still doesn't help completely. She also gets constipated and when she is in pain, she forces wind out of her bottom which is very smelly. As a result of all of this, she cries most of the time. It's not her hungry cry, but a "I'm in pain cry". It's very upsetting as I don't know what else I can do. I think this is all happening because she drinks her milk so quickly. She drinks 3oz every 2 hours. Most of it is breast milk, but as I can't always keep up with her demands, I top up with formula. I've spoken to my health visitor about this and she says this is normal etc. But I'm struggling to cope with the crying and it's getting me down. Is there anything I can do to help the colic or a way of making her drik slower as I believe this is the root of the problem. Has anyone been through this and have any advice?

Id be tempted to try a faster flowing teat first off.

Also colocynth granules really helped my ds with colic - not all pharmacies sell them but theyre a homeopathic remedy. Little granules which you place on the tongue before a feed.

mmme..... both my too have been breast fed with the odd bottles, but I noticed bottles made them much more windy. And unless you have a very fast flow when breastfeeding this should also be slower.... It wasn't clear from your post if you are expressing or feeding off the boob, but if off boob then possibly try more boob less bottle (just as an aside you really shouldn't need to top up- try the breast/bottle feeding threads for good advice on supply) ? If not feeding from boob the wind/colic does pass and I found lying bubs on matt/floor and wiggling their legs (like you are gently dancing them sometimes helped.....Hang on in there it does get better honest.

Hi my 10 week old started becoming "colicky" after about 10 days, fine during the day but unable to bring any wind up at night. I took her to see a cranial osteopath and the transformation has been incredible. We went for the first treatment when she was three weeks and it slightly improved but after our 2nd visit it was like I had a different child.

I have had 4 treatments in total the last being yesterday (but they didn't feel that they needed to "do much") and I have such a contented baby. Everyone comments on how settled she is....She brings her wind up as soon as I wind her after feeding and they also worked on her pelvis which allows her to pass wind the other end too. If you live in london contact the Foundation for Paediatric Osteopathy in clerkenwell (which specialises in children) and get an appointment as soon as you can. If she is being sick as well could it be reflux? I think that the osteopath can help with this too. Honestly I was very sceptical about the osteopath but I have been truly amazed at how she responded to the treatment. I feel guilty that I didn't take my two older children to one when they were babies.

You could also try colief but this didn't help my little one (I found it hard trying to use it as Im breast feeding) I also tried eliminating lots of foods from my diet and I think that by not eating Onions, orange juice and possibly cows milk made the baby a little better but it didn't make as much difference as the cranial osteopathy did.

I hope that you get some form of relief for her (and you as well).

Thanks for all your comments. She has been bottle fed from birth as she wouldn't take the breast and never did. She is mainly on breast milk, but as she feeds every two hours, I can't always express enough for her so she has formula too. I would say 2 thirds breast milk. I did have her on normal flow teats from the beginning, but she gulped it down so moved to slow flow teats in the hope that she wouldn't gulp and take in more air. No matter what teats I used she still gulps and is sick all the time because she drinks so fast. Doctor has prescribed lactulose for her constipation and I'm hoping that it might have some effect on her wind too. Just hope it passes soon!
