please can someone reaassure me, I feed him approx 35 ounces of aptamil. He has just gone above the 99.6th percentile, up until couple weeks ago he was following it, he was 8.13 at birth. The HV today seemed concerned about his weight but obviously there is nothing I can do about it - has anyone else had experienced this? I have to admit I feel a little concerned that I have overfed him, but how can you overfeed a baby?

35 ounces seems a lot, but I don't formula feed so can't really give advice.

My DS is 33 weeks and 19lbs and I thought he was a big chunk. All babies develop differently though, and many slim down when they start moving.

My son was 19lb 5oz at 15 weeks ...he was only 6lb 7oz at birth - he drank 8oz 6 times a day ...he is now 7.5yrs 135cm and 3.5 stone. My now 19 yr old was much the same and is now 6 foot and weighs 10 stone. Stop worrying ...he will start moving and balance out

patty, my friend's son is the same age and size as yours but he's bf so no one gives her a hard time about it .

He'll slim down as he starts to move. My DS1 was a chunky baby but it dropped off him when he started to walk.

Try not to worry.

Thanks I knew I could count on mumsnet for some reassuring words. I wasn't so worried before I spoke to hv but unintentionally she made me feel guilty

My eldest ds was 9.3 born by almost 6 months hed tripled his birthweight - he was a stonker but hes now 6'3 and skinny as a lat his legs are hollow thi .

Macforme · 13/05/2010 22:46

My son was the same.. 22 pounds at 5 months.. a chunky chunk! Was walking by 9.5 months, hasn't stopped since and is now a very very slim, fit teenager! The HV told me to cut his feeds down and I just ignored her..

Also still has a humongous appetite

nickschick · 14/05/2010 07:27

My HV told me to give him watered down formula .....he was a chunk tho!!

Nobody can ever believe its him when they see baby pics.

MIL looked out of the window to see me carrying him up her drive....she said it looked like he should have been carrying me!!.

He was walking at 9 months tho too,and could get up and downstairs.

I was really watchful of his diet he didnt have any chocolate at all always fruit and baby yogs and water to drink.

Some babies are just bigger, and will lose weight once they get mobile. I think both of mine fit into that category, ds1 was born on 50th percentile but he went up to the 90s he was a really hungry baby, and was quite chubby but once he could crawl and now he can walk he doesn't look chubby just average now although still tall for his age and not skinny.
ds2 is still really big, i dont know his actual weight but bigger than ds1 was @ his age, and he does get comments so i think pretty big he is in the 90s on percentile too im sure. but i am not worried about it because he was born @ 9.5lb, length and head circumferance also about 99 on the percentile thing, he is just big overall. he does look chubby though but when they get mobile they lose that.
so my point is that if you're feeding that amount because he really is hungry and needs it then i would just give it to him, you cant starve your baby, and he will lose it once he is mobile.
have you asked them to check his length or anything? i know they say length is not always totally accurate, but if they do check the length and realise they are pretty long they will tend to back off and accept that your child is just bigger? even adults bmi is done from height and weight, so doesn't seem fair to categorise babies needing to be all the same weight when some are small and some are tall and long. so worth mentioning that to them, if he looks in proportion he may be longer than average too? if they say 'we dont do weight' ask them the head circumferance?
But try not to worry, obviously when he is on food give him healthy diet and encourage him to crawl and run around when he is bigger, as im sure you would anyway.
It really doesn't mean he is guarenteed to be a 'fat child' i've seen loads of babies who were so chubby, and it just comes off when they get moving

My DS2 was 10lb 1oz at birth, lost no weight at all and put on approx a pound a week for the first ten weeks of his life, he was breast fed so no-one said a word other than jokingly. At 2.7 he weighs almost as much as his skinny 6yo brother! However, he is above the 99.9centile in terms of his height (was 59cm long at birth)and so he looks propoertionately correct (although as a baby he did look like Phil Mitchell ).

As others have said, once they start getting mobile, particularly walking, the weight drops fairly quickly.

pattymc · 24/05/2010 20:25

last week the HV asked me if someone else might be feeding my baby without me knowing!!! made me feel terrible, she said she had to ask as it does happen. His thighs are fatter than ds1 who is 3 in august. he is nearly 5 months and over 22lbs, thinking of cutting his feeds down to see if it bothers him

35 ounces is what Aptamil recommend for a 5 month old, so it doesn't sound like you're overfeeding him.

Worrier28 · 25/05/2010 12:03

My lo was a chubster until around 6 months and all I used to get was "he's a bit boy", "what are you feeding him" etc. I used to dread weigh-in as there was always a comment.

He is now very slim at 13 months.
