moving from bottle to beaker/ cup

ds is 13mo. he will drink water and milk from a beaker but never a massive amount and never finishes it. (we're using tommee tippee flip spout ones)
we give him his morning milk in a beaker with breakfast and he'll drink some of it. however if you put it in a bottle then he'll drain it straight after breakfast.

how do i move away from bottles onto beakers/ cups?

is it a big deal if he at 13 mo doesn't drink all the milk? water is very good for him , or pure juice watered down- after seeing your last post on decluttering maybe you could chuck out the bottles
if he is eating well , and drinking water etc when thirsty I would be happy to let him carry on with the cup of water/juice and milk if he requires it. He will soon get the hang of it

my dd was the same, chuck the bottles and stick with it they up their in take as needed. Also, try a different cup one of the 12 month ones or an open one if he's up to it (dd wasn't) it could be that he finds the tommee tippee laborious they're quite slow flow.

the fact is by this stage they're eating other dairy - yoghurts, cheese so most don't need lots and lots of milk for health. And if he's eating a varied diet (plenty of fruit and veg) he might not need the extra fluids at this stage.

We just stopped the prebed bottle for DD (18 months). Just get rid of the bottles. DD cried a lot the first night, a little the second, fine by the third. When she realised that really the bottle wasn't coming back she went with the cup!

Just to add another point of view - my dd has just turned 2 and she still has a bottle in the evening. She doesn't have a bottle at any other time (in fact the little bugger angel refused all bottles until 13months when I became pregnant again and she started to refuse the breast. I perservered with the bottle then because I was worried she wasn't getting enough milk with a beaker). I'm not worried that she still has a bottle - she drinks from all types of beakers and open cups with no probs at all. But it was the only way she would drink a good amount of milk. We'll remove it sometime and I'm sure it will be fine because she'll understand why she has to give it up. And for now it's still a lovely soft way for her to finish the evening routine.

can I just point out that dairy isn't always the best source of calcium , there is more in broccoli than cows milk - so if the liitle ones are eating a varied diet I wouldn't worry about milk at all.

My DS takes plenty of water from the TT free flow beaker, but not much milk. However, he will take a full milk 'bottle' from the NUK training beaker - it is like a bottle but the teat is a silicone spout. Perhaps you could try that?

also, there are lots of young ones who drop milk altogether as they don't like it, does them no harm if they have a varied diet.

i also remembered we moved to a straw at that stage and dd loved it.

mrsflux · 13/05/2010 14:47

i think i'm reluctant to drop milk as i know it's good stuff.
also he always drinks at least 3/4 of the milk in a bottle so i'm sure he still wants it.
it's not the cuddles he craves either as he can be a right wriggly monkey but once he gets stuck into a bottle he's fine. well till he's had enough that is.

i was a bit of a beaker addict for a while and decided that the valve ones are no good at all. might look for the NUK one.

Haven't read the other posts so sorry if I am repeating anything. We are going through this at the moment with DS who is 12 months. He drinks about 2/3 of what we give him in a tommee tippee cup but if he had it in a bottle he would have it all. However, he is on 3 meals a day & 2 snacks a day and really does not need to drink all that milk like he used to - I think it takes a while to get used to that as for the first year of like milk is so important.

I think it depends how much you want to get him off the bottle. To me its important so I am pretty persistent. DS not too happy about not having his bottle at bedtime and if he is v tired and throwing a total wobbly we have let him have it but otherwise we are trying to get him used to having it from the tommee tippee cup and I think I will chuck the bottles by the end of this week.
