Shriek/screaming 9 month old

My 9 month old has taken to screaming on an ad hoc basis throughout the day. He did this a few weeks ago but then stopped but he doesn't seem to be stopping this time.
Is it teething?
He's usually a placid happy baby.
Not sure whether to tell him off or ignore it? It's embrassing when in restaurants or shops!
Any advice would be appreciated.

Bless him, sounds like he has discovered his voice! I remember my DD doing this. You can try to tell them in a firm voice "No shrieking please DS" but you'll be lucky if he pays much attention to you. If it's in a restaurant I tended to whisk her out, in a shop just to ignore it. It might just be a phase.

Hi, we're going through something similar - DS is 9 months and likewise has taken to shrieking throughout the day. Painfully loud at times. And likewise, he's normally a lovely happy chap.

I've tried having a steady supply of bread sticks and oat cakes to hand, which seems to work when we're out in public. Not sure if it's the distraction, or he's hungry. DS has no teeth yet so perhaps it'll be soon? We've tried saying no but he's really too little to take any notice. Any other advice out there?!

your baby is just strenghthening his/her voice. it is a stage of development to take pride in. my boy did it around 9 months and was saying his first word 6 weeks later.
he loved it if we screamed back at him. he also loved to scream going over a cobbled street in the buggy listening to the rise an fall of his own voice.

don't worry about it, it will pass.....

Think this is quite common. My DD (now nearly 1) did this at 9 months. It was the prelude to those first Da-Da's and Mum-ma's.

I think my DD was quite frustrated at 9 months and I think the screeching helped her express that. She couldn't quite crawl properly nor did she understand what she does now. The screeching stopped when she started to be able remember words and so we could communicate interactively and she started to be able to crawl round on her own.

She doesn't screech now but insteads chatters charmingly!

Thanks everyone useful info. He's just started crawling today so maybe that'll help! He's given up on Mama, Dada etc but his favourite noise, other than screaming, sounds like "Wow", we love it.
Out for lunch today & he was such a good boy until an older baby starting screaming so he decided to copy!!! They clearly understood each other! At least everyone found it funny.
