romper/sleepsuits v proper clothes for baby?

just thought i'd take a straw poll: do you think there is a certain age when you should dress your baby in 'proper clothes' rather than in all in one romper/playsuits/sleepsuits whatever u want to call them!

my ds is eight and a bit months but i have to confess i like him in sleepsuits cos it makes him look more babyish - when he's in trousers and tops/dungarees he looks like a real little boy (he's v long so he's always looked older than he is).

or do you think older babies look silly when they're still in newborn type clothes??

My son is 11 months. I still put him in sleepsuits quite often. He also sometimes wears jeans and a shirt. It really depends on my mood, but I figure as long as they make sleepsuits that fit him? I'll keep dressing him in them!!!

Weegle · 11/05/2010 20:21

with my 3 I have tended to keep them in babygrows till between 3-4 months and then soft trousers with feet and tops for quite a while after. Dresses and 'outfits' for special occasions. Then more proper clothes at the crawling and cruising stage.

mistressploppy · 12/05/2010 09:39

I was wondering this myself. Obviously it doesn't REALLY matter but I do tend to put 7mo DS in trousers etc if we go out to toddler group etc. Otherwise he often stays in sleepsuits - just so cosy! And it's such a pain to keep socks on him

He's quite small too so still in 3-6m ones

callmemamma · 12/05/2010 11:36

My opinion is that once they coming nearer 1yo they look a little bit silly wearing rompers or sleepsuits however you call them.On the other hand when my dd was 1-5 months she was in them all the time, real clothes only when going out.

heth1980 · 12/05/2010 11:40

I tend to keep my 12 week old in sleepsuits or trousers with feet cos it's such a pain when she kicks socks off every 5 minutes! plus I always think they look so cosy and comfy.....I know I'm secretly happier in tracksuit pants or PJ bottoms myself

PfftThePinkoLeftyDragon · 12/05/2010 11:46

On the school run and around the house I kept DD in sleepsuits until she was about 10 months. If we went out to see anyone I would put something else on her, and at that point she was starting to walk and get around so she seemed not so much the little baby any more.

AngelDog · 12/05/2010 15:19

Glad I'm not the only one to use sleepsuits. DS is 4.5 months and all the other babies I know are in 'proper' clothes. I just can't be bothered with proper clothes - especially socks!

Harimo · 12/05/2010 15:29

I had my DS out of sleepsuits at 3mo. I was deluded.

my DD (9MO) is still in them and they are great.
Bestr clothes for a baby to wear.

teaandcakeplease · 12/05/2010 15:34

Agree with Weegle, did the same as her with both of my two. Always more likely to dress mine in jeans etc in early days if going out tbh.

My second child was a Winter baby though so whatever he was wearing was hidden by the snow suit

Sleepsuits are so comfy. I moved to mainly tracky bottoms and soft tops after sleep suits for the crawling stage.

camflower · 12/05/2010 19:35

i'm putting off shoes as long as possible - socks are enough faff as it is

I put mine in clothes straight away really, well maybe the sleep suit kind of outfits more for the first 1-2 months (i seperate between sleeping ones and one piece day time outfits tho..) but i think its fine to keep them in sleepsuits if you want, nothing wrong with it, i kind of enjoy dressing mine up though so thats why

IHeartKingThistle · 13/05/2010 08:21

With my first I had her in proper clothes at 4 weeks which looking back was silly, so much more hassle and then I wished I'd held on to the baby stage longer. Ds has eczema and scratches with his toes so I have the perfect excuse - he's wearing sleepsuits till he's 18!

MoonFaceMama · 13/05/2010 11:50

My ds1, 3 months is almost always in baby grow things, day or night, and i don't have seperate ones for sleeping either. If it's clean it goes on! Proper clothes are a faff and don't seem as comfy. I have him in terrys so think this is bulky enough for t'poor lad! Also proper clothes don't fit as well round terrys now days either! He wears clothes sometimes if we're off out. Mostly to try and get some wear out of gifts... Guilt. He's big for his age and has lots of hair so looks like a proper boy in clothes which is cute but i don't want his baby days to fly by. There'll be time for him being a little boy... And all the fiddley clothes that entails.↲ i say just enjoy your dc, be that by dressing them up or by not stressing yourself about it... Which ever suits'

wasabipeanut · 13/05/2010 12:42

With my nearly 4 mo DD she still spends most of her time in either sleep suits or leggings with feet in and little tops. I often pop a funky tank top (DS's old ones) over the sleep suits if we're going out to keep her warm and make it look a little more "outfitty."

Shoe horning her into dresses and tights is a faff I really don't have time for. Although I do quite like a soft jersey dress over a long sleeved t vest and trousers.

lisianthus · 13/05/2010 15:08

My DD is 10 months and is in sleepsuits all the time except for toddler class and special things like that. When we go out we usually just put a jacket on her over her sleepsuit. She has a few nice little dresses and outfits for special occasions.

Given that she gets unbelievably messy when she eats (which is fine with me - she's having fun!) I'd much prefer to have her trash and irretrievably stain a sleepsuit than a pretty dress or outfit. I just take off the sleepsuit and put on a clean one. And sleepsuits are much cheaper and come in 5 packs!

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 13/05/2010 15:11

with DS1 he got up and dressed into day clothes every day from about 6 weeks.

with DS2 he was still in his PJ's when we got him undressed for his bath at bed time till about 6 months, and from then he wore clothes most days at some point but often not before lunchtime.

Skegness · 13/05/2010 15:14

I agree with Firawla- dress them in whatever makes you happy and think "swoooon I have the gorgiest baby in the world ever". The baby won't mind as long as he's comfy.

DownyEmerald · 13/05/2010 16:17

I liked sleepsuits, but I did put her in proper clothes from six months ish - looking back at photos, I was wrong (she is now 4).

I think because I was looking at her so much she seemed bigger than she actually was. Now I look at photos and she is this tiny wee thing in silly stupid trousers barely a couple of inches between the bottom of her nappy (real) and the hem, and silly tiny t-shirts. I'm exagerating slightly but now wince when I see old Royle family and baby David in his gear. What I dressed dd in was far from that, but I can see how people get there if that makes sense.

I was also following the crowd I guess.

jonsies22 · 13/05/2010 16:38

I'm a big sleepsuit fan! They are much easier than messing around with socks etc, and are comfy. I must admit though that I tend to follow the crowd when we go to groups and put DS in little outfits.

We went for DS first jabs a couple of weeks ago and lots of mums had there babies in all sorts of fancy outfits. Our clinic is set up so baby gets weighed by HV, sees Dr forbaby check, then nurse for jabs. Getting them undressed 3 times must have been such a mission, i'm pleased I went with the sleepsuits!

jonsies22 · 13/05/2010 16:40

I haven't got the hang of these acronyms yet!!! I have a DD NOT a DS!

fiveweeksandcounting · 13/05/2010 20:27

My DS2 is 6 weeks and I have just started to put him into day and night clothes, mostly because I'm sick to death of the poppers on the sleepsuits. I don't know how anyone can think that they are less hassle. He wears white sleepsuits to bed and either coloured ones, footless ones or leggings with a bodysuit in the daytime. Oh, and GAP socks never fall off. I wouldn't put him in jeans or anything like that for a good few months but I do think that sleepsuits look a bit silly after they're about 3 months old.

I put DS1 into proper clothes at 2 weeks and he looked ridiculous and DD into leggings and tops or footless rompers at about a month again because the poppers on the sleepsuits were making me lose the will to live.
