Obsessive behaviour in 6 year old

Hi. I wondered if anyone had any experience of obsessive behaviour in a 6 year old. My sister-in-law is at her wits end with my nephew who gets very distressed and angry if anyone goes in his bedroom, which he keeps obsessively tidy and everything has to be in a certain place. It has got to the point where he can't have friends round to play as he has a screaming fit if they move anything or make any "mess". I've tried suggesting reward charts etc. but she says she's tried and they don't work with him. She's obviously wondering about OCD but I thought I'd see if anyone has any experience or suggestions! Thanks!

Hmm.
Does he use accents that he's picked up off the TV? Any lack of eye contact?

Not sure about the accents off the telly! But I think eye contact could be an issue - difficult to tell if he's just not hearing people in that boy way (!) or something more serious... He was IVF and I know of links to autism, and he does have lots of "funny ways" for want of a better phrase.

I think I might mention my concerns to my GP and see what he thought about an assessment for autism. I would also ask the school for their opinion (I am a SENCO). This sounds as if it could bear further investigation.

Thanks a lot for the comments. I think I'll ask my partner to broach it with her sensitively (he's her brother and they're close), to see if she feels comfortable seeing the GP.

He needs assessing for autism/ASD. The need for routine and the need to line things up is a classic sign.

Agree completely with autism suggestions. DS was not diagnosed until Yr 7 but looking back, he had many traits and quirks that a good SENCO would have picked up. A referral to CAMHS in any case would be helpful.
Hope SIL accepts help as support and understanding will make a big difference.
