Still drinking milk from bottle-is it that bad?

My ds is 2.6 and is still having bedtime milk from a bottle. I really want to stop this as I know its not good for his teeth. The problem is that he is such a routine baby and the bottle has been part of his bedtime routine (which we have perfected - hes as good as gold at bedtime)for such a long time that he screams if we try and give him his milk in anything besides his bottle. This is not helped at all by the fact that DH doesnt want him to give his milk up.

I know its not good for his teeth but what can i do to try and discourage it and what are the facts that I can tell DH about it affecting his teeth?

are you brushing his teeth afterwards?

if not then you need to start

think how you will feel if he needs fillings in his baby teeth

One bottle of milk in the evening is fine, as long as he doesn't carry on sipping it through the night.

Brush his teeth afterwards, about 20 minutes afterwards; not straight afterwards because the mouth needs time to clean itself a bit before you start brushing. Otherwise you risk brushing the milk into the teeth iyswim.

I think if ,he isnt falling asleep in bed with the bottle and you are brushing his teeth after he has it. I wouldn't worry about it yet.

If he was falling asleep on it I would be more concerned.

hi! i have started weaning my 1yo DD off her bed bottle as the HV said it it could be bad for her growing front teeth, i wasn't aware of this.. i didnt think it would really be a problem either

would he take one of the sports bottles type thing with the teaty type top. (? IYSWIM?)I have seen good ones in supermarkets.

I only say this as have a friend who left it late and DC 5 and in school still having bottle at bedtime and is creating bigtime about it going. Also has affected his teeth alignment.

Its not easy so I wish you luck.

ok if its only at bedtime and you are brushing teeth afterwards. otherwise tell DH about filings in baby teeth?

When DD was 3 I told her no more bedtime milk as she was grown up now (it has been in a beaker since her first birthday)... because I wanted to get rid of the night time nappies. 3 days later she'd forgotten about it.
