excellent present. ds got one for his 2nd b'day and it's still played with 5 years on! we got nice wooden one but if you can cope with plastic in your garden I'd probably go for plastic - as big as you have room for and with lid! You need more sand than you'd believe and it will end up everywhere but lots of fun!

and don't spend a fortune on so called 'play sand' from ELC or wherever......you can buy big bags of silver sand or block paving sand from Wickes for about £2.50 and it's exactly the same stuff!

tassisssss · 09/05/2010 15:03

is it really the same stuff heth? i didn't know that. we need to top ours up and was going to buy playsand again.

Excelent idea!I was hoping to by sandpit for my 2 yo dd today at boot sale but did not come across any
Playsand from argos is £2.99 for 15 kg bag.Surely it must last for a while

I am going to get one for summer this year and am going to dig up my huge pampas grass to make room!
DEFINITELY get a lid though or you will have a giant litter box for all the neighbourhood cats!

The wooden ones can be expensive and they are only a frame with weed control fabric so i was going to make my own with the weed control fabric i had and leftover logroll edging and just pin a plastic cover down with rocks but in the end went for an easy peasy plastic one with a secure lid to keep the cats off it and loads of space to leave the sandtoys in it plus the lid can be used as a paddling pool or with play balls in it which saves blowing up a paddling pool. My dd loves playing in sand, keeps her quiet for hours and its much better than a sandtable as you get loads more in and less gets spilled all over the garden! We spent £29 on the sandpit and 4 bags of playsand so a bargain for all the happiness it brings!

Remember to get a lid as cats love sandpits for a litter box.

Don't get one of the wooden ones with a fabric sheet cover and permeable liner. They still get insects in and go rotten IME.

I am now looking for a wooden one but with a proper wooden lid and base. Anyone know where I can get one from?

We bought one of these

www.elc.co.uk/toy/wooden-table-sandpit/

five years ago. It has been the best toy DD2 ever had. She has used it nearly every day of every summer (and quite a few winter ones too) since. I'm a childminder so lots of other children have played with it too. The fact that it doubles as a children's picnic table has been a big bonus.

It is quite expensive but has been worth every penny twice over. It is still as good as new.

We've got the ELC sand/water table and it's one of the best toys that DS (2.6) has. He played with it loads last summer and will again this year.
I prefer the table to a traditional pit as it's got a lid, you can move it around easily, it takes less sand than a big pit and they don't actually sit in it so there's less scope for tracking sand through the house (though not much, it still gets everywhere! )
