Does anyone know anything about adenoids?

My daughter's key worker at nursery suspects that she may have adenoids. Does anyone know anything about them? Are they treated now? I remember when I was at school people used to have them taken out but I'm not sure that this is done anymore.

Does anyone have any experince of this with their little ones?

I don't have experience with my DD, but I had my adenoids out at the grand old age of 24. If nursery suspect your DD then I would just take her to GP for an opinion, you might end up with a referral for Ear,Nose and Throat.

Can I ask you, then - did it affect your hearing. Sometimes she complains that noises are far too noisy. I wondered if that's connected?

I've just got a referal from my gp for my 2 year old to see the ENT's as I suspect he needs adenoids and tonsils removed.

I had my adenoids removed when I was 5 (25 years ago). I've never had a problem with my hearing but apparently my hearing was the reason they were taken out. I remember my parents saying that when I was a kid that I'd sit right infront of tv so I could hear it properly.

The keyworker may be right seeing as everyone has them s/he should retrain as a doc

See here

I had mine removed when i was young due to problems with my ears. Was in hospital over night, i believe they went in through my nose as i did have nosebleeds/blood up my nose following this?

ENT referral is normal.

Can I ask what has caused them to bring this up? Havwe you noticed ay proplems?

DS has enlarged adenoids and it has affected his hearing in that the ENT says that was to blame for his glue ear and helping cause the blockage. The glue ear gave him poor hearing but he couldn't stand being in noisy environments as there was too much noise all at once for him.

The first marker they flagged up for his enlarged adenoids was his snoring, he snores like an old man and it is really loud. He was in hospital for something else and they asked if he always sounded like that.
They then discovered some other problems connected to it.
It might be worth a trip to your gp for a referral to ENT, they cannot actually physically look at the adenoids but they will look for other indicators and sicuss it all with you to see if there is a problem.

Even if the adenoids are enlarged they generally don't take them out unless there are other associated problems that could cause ill health long term as enlarged adenoids are often not such a big problem as the child grows and the tubes around the area grow as well.

Ineedaclaenaer That's why we got our referal. Ds1 snores like a trucker. It's louder than dp, really quite shocking

Her keyworker used to be a nurse, so I don't really feel she's interfering that much!!

She has problems pronouncing p/d/c/k and those sounds you make when you have a cold. She has a constantly runny nose (mostly her right nostril), can't blow her nose.

Sometimes she has nosebleeds - nothing bad but you can see a bit of blood in it and it sort of smells (do you know what I mean?). I thought she had an infection as a younger child (she's 3 now) she used to shove things up her nose (mostly fish sticks!!) and I was forever getting them out, then she used to stuff beads up there - so when I saw blood I took her to the doctors to check she didn't have something up there that I'd missed and they said it was inflamed but they thought she had an infection (a bit like, but not, impetigo) so after putting cream up there, it seemed to go. So with all that, and the fact that loud noises bother her and now what her Keyworker has said, I'm thinking there may be something in it. I suppose she does snore, too - but generally it's her Daddy's snorng that bothers me most (obviously from his side of the family!).

I had those problems too LuluF - I felt like I constantly had a blocked nose and sounded like I had a permanent cold when I spoke. I didn't have hearing problems though.
