19 month old upset going to nursery

My 19 month old DS has been going to nursery full time for the last 9 months now and we have been really happy with the standard of care given. Intially he took a while to settle but he seemed to be fine and would happily toddle off to play once we arrived.

However in the last week he has been really upset when I drop him off in the morning. He cries when we pull up outside the door and says "no nursery" while we go in. Once we get in, he screams and cries and holds on to me for dear life. I literally have to prise his hands away and pass him to his key worker. I have called to see how he is after 45 mins or so and they always say the same thing "he stopped crying 5 mins after you left and now he is happily playing". I have asked the nursery staff if anything has changed recently that might trigger his reaction - they said nothing has changed. When I pick him up, he seems very happy and affectionate with the staff.

I have always felt gulity about leaving him in nursery but I have no choice, I have to work. It is so upsetting for both of us and I need to understand what I can do to help improve the situation. Suggestions please???

They do this - he's learned that if he makes a fuss mummy makes a big fuss of him back. Skip happily up to the door, a quick, 'see you later darling' and skip away. He will get through this, you aren't being mean, you are just doing what you have to and he probably is absolutely fine in less than five minutes. DD used to wail like she was being murdered, and as soon as she couldn't see me anymore would skip off to play

She grew out of it btw.

Thank you! I hope he will grow out of it - it's torture at the minute
