12yo girl, armpit hair and swimming?

So swimming lessons are kicking off in my 12yo daughter's school again, and this time around she has developed some hair in her armpits and is a bit embarrassed about it.

So Should I:
(a) Help her to shave her armpits?
(b) search town for some sort of granny swimsuit that hides her entire body?
(c) Give her a girl-power talk about her beautiful body and encourage her to go hairy?
(d) none of the above?

help!

Buy her an electric shaver and show her how to use it.

Help her shave. Have done this already with my swimming mad 11 year old dd. She asked me as she was getting embarassed. Leg hair I persuaded her to ignore for the moment - cos of the hassle factor.

help her shave!!

My Mum wouldn't let me shave my legs at this age, I shredded my legs to ribbons with my Dad's razor.

electric shaver is the way to go. please

Definitely the shave option. When I was about that age a girl in my dance class had really hairy armpits and it made me boak. For the life of me I couldn't figure out why she didn't just shave them.

Oh - I have this with dd1 - I was going to suggest veet rather than shaving.

GetOrfMoiLand · 27/04/2010 08:50

Definitely A. I wouldn't bother with an electric razor, just buy a decent wet shaver (the blokes ones are better and cheaper, none of that venus shit, I used a gilette Mach turbo thingie). Then use cheap conditioner instead of shaving foam. Help her the first time and then she would be able to do it herself.

DD avoided shaving her legs for years (she is very blonde) however her armpit hair is dark, and she was self conscious swimming.

pigletmania · 27/04/2010 11:05

Yes get your dd an electric shaver or help her shave. I remember over 20 years ago at Primary a girl when we were about 10/11 had hairy arm pits it just did not look nice poor thing in her swimming suit.

Bechka · 27/04/2010 20:41

Agree with all the others, I am very dark and I think it would have traumatised me if my mum had made me do school swimming lessons with armpit hair. Hope whichever shave option you've gone for works for her, if not just try something else eg veet or wet shaver. I hope she enjoys her swim lessons.

maria1665 · 29/04/2010 08:57

Agree with the above - except I gave my 11 year old a tube of VEET. Its one of the few times as an a parent I feel I have got it right. DD1 was making excuses about not wanting to go swimming, which she normally loves. Then she told me why she was worried, and by sheer luck I had a tube in the cupboard. Problem solved in an instant.

The upshot is that when her periods started a few months later, she came to me straight away, without embarassment, which I am convinced is due to the way I dealt with the armpit situation.

titchy · 29/04/2010 09:14

I have an 11 year old dd with armpit hair and regular swimminglessons. BUT - she seems to have no qualms about it at all... which I'm happy about at the moment.

But she starts secondary in September - should I suggest she gets rid of said hair, and thus make an issue out of it, but possibly save her being teased about it. Or revel in her blase attitude...?

minxofmancunia · 29/04/2010 09:27

a, I have very dark hair and my Mum wouldn't let me shave legs or underarms so I did it in secret when I was 12, she went mad and was really really horrible when she found out. Can still remember it to this day and it's one of those things (along with making absolutely NO effort with my hair as a child, I was teased mercilessly and can't look at photos of myself before the age of 12 as the state of my hair makes me ) I stuggle to forgive her for.

As soon as dd (only 3.7 at the mo) has hair and wants it removing I'll be there!
