Hip scan tomorrow for my 12 week old - What to expect?

We were offered this when she born as there was something wrong with her hip? The GP didnt mention it on her 6 week check.

Has anyone taken their lo to a hip scan? What should I expect? Thanks.

DS had one as a routine check (he was breech) - it was really quick, he wasn't bothered by it in the slightest and they reassured us there and then that everything was OK, no waiting for results.

I was really worried about it beforehand but it was really no big deal at all

Brilliant, thank you. I think they are doing it because dd was back to back and turned in labour.

I can sleep tonight now

My Dd had a hip scan (also breech) I think it's just something they like to check as any problems are corrected better if they are discovered earlier.

My DD's hip scan was pretty easy - the nurse positioned her as they wanted her and (yes, she wailed throughout) I don't think it hurt her at all.

I alos didn't have to wait for results - they told me there and then there was no problem.

Dd had clicky hips at birth, also clicky shoulders which weren't noticed til later. She had a scan at about 8w. The procedure is not unpleasant - nothing to worry about.

For the scan I think we undid her nappy, but didn't have to take it off completely. The sonographer put gel on dd's hip and then did an ultrasound scan, just like you have when you're pregnant. She moved dd's leg around a bit, and adjusted her position. Did the same on the other side. Dd didn't like it and objected very loudly. It wasn't a painful or frightening procedure, but the gel is cold and dd had been fast asleep!

IIRC we were given the all-clear immediately, but were also given advice on how to handle dd, given that she was still clicky without there being any actual deformity. She outgrew the clickiness.

HTH and you get a good outcome.

Hi Mama, the scan itself will be fine. If it's like the ones we had, your DD will have gel put on her hip and then will have to be held still on her side while the technician passes a wand type thing over the area to get a picture. It takes a few minutes and is totally painless. You can help to hold her still and reassure her. My DD did cry -she didn't like having to be held still - but it was over so quickly.

My DD did turn out to have a hip problem that was picked up by the scan at 12 weeks. Her hip socket hadn't quite formed properly - quite common in girl breech babies. It was corrected by 3 months in a pavlik harness that held her legs in a frog type position. If this does happen to you be reassured that it really isn't a big deal - DD didn't mind the harness at all and the time passed very quickly. She's absolutely fine now just a little bit behind in terms of walking etc.

Chances are though that everything will be ok. It's actually really good that she's getting checked as in the unlikely event there are problems they are much easier to sort out at this early stage. Good luck!

ds barely noticed, and was fine - routine as he was breech until 36 weeks.
