Hi

Just a bit concerned that my son who will be 3 at end of summer does not seem to know many colour yet. I think he knows black and white sometimes but rest are a guess. He just does not seem to remember them, I have not made a big thing of learning him and just let him do it at his pace but bit worried now. I was telling him today the balloon was red then asked him a few mintues later and he said "I cannot remember the colour" .

Have got some colour books to try but not sure what else. He seem ok for his development in other ways or think he is
He can count to 13 or 14 and is potty trained since Xmas, speaks well, can pedal a bike with stabiliers etc etc. Not very good at puzzles either though

My other son knew colours at 22mths andI am trying not to compare but have read things like they should know some colour by now. Could be by colour blind or something? Doubt it though

Any help for paranoid mum on ds2

Ellie

Hi there

I think developmentally they only 'need' to know three colours by age three.

Dont stress, he will get there!

Does he know his numbers? There are simple tests for colour blindness if you're worried, but he's still quite young for them.

Don't worry though, he'll get it

you could describe everything to him with its colour

e.g. when colouring say 'would you like the red pen, or the yellow pen, i'm going to have the green one' etc
or when out and about talk about the colours of the cars in the road, the colour of the flowers in peoples gardens etc
when getting dressed talk about the colours of the clothes he is going to wear, i.e. would you like the green t-shirt or the brown one etc

this will help to get him interested in the differences of colours.

I believe it is very rare to be colour blind with all colours instead it tends to be just certain colours. but I read once that as many as 1 in every 8 boys/men are red/green colour blind

I am sure he will get there

Thanks I am worried just tried him again tonight and he seems to have no memory it is like he does not know what colour is.I say again this is the red ballon and he says red balloon and I say about 30 seconds later what colour was the ballon and he says I do not know or I cannot remember.

Just have to stick at it and like you said try to mention colour all the time. He knows loads of words adn can say long sentences etc so his speech and learning is ok just this colour thing.
