When did your baby crawl/pull themselves up on things?

Just wondering as my dd is nearly 10.5 months and she isn't doing either although when sitting on the floor she raises one knee and puts that leg behind her as in maybe getting ready to go forward but that's been happening for weeks.
When on her tummy she flails about, tries to get on all fours but gives up and moans.................

Don't forget all babies are different. My dd is 10 months and is almost ready to walk. She is considered advanced for her age though, so I'm finding it difficult to help you here. She was dragging herself around on her tummy from about 8 months and pulling up at 9 months. She now stands constantly and walks around the furniture. On the other hand I have a friend with a baby that is 11 months and he is only just starting to pull himself up and still only pulls himself around on his tummy.

Have you seen your HV lately? Perhaps this is something you can discuss with them and they can assess whether she is fine. I'm sure she probably is, some babies just prefer the safety of their surroundings and others (like me child) just don't stop!!

If she is trying and you say she gives up, then just try to encourage her and you could even crawl around on the floor with her to encourage her.

EG. my hubby and I put our baby on the wood floor in her nappy and put a bunch of keys a bit away from her and left her to it. She got up and crawled and that was the end of her pulling herself around on her tummy.

Try putting some of her favourite toys just out of reach to encourage her to venture over to them. She'll get there eventually, just let her go on her own time and make it fun too.

dd pulled herself to standing at 11 months. ds was 14 months, although he had orthopedic problems. ds recently ran 4 miles for a school fun run at the age of 8.

Your baby will get there. If you are still concerned then talk to your health visitor.

Kewcumber · 25/04/2010 20:29

about 1 yr though he was very premmie. Agree with discussing with your HV is you think she is any good.

DD started pulling up at approx 11 months, and walked at 15 months. I know of two boys who didn't walk 'til after 18 months and they're doing just fine. Is your DD er... heavy?! I have observed (though I'm really no expert on these things!!) that chunkier babies can take longer to learn to walk, though IMO 10.5 months is not late for pulling up, personally I wouldn't be worrying yet.

Thanks for the replies- no, she isn't heavy at all for her age - between 9th and 25th percentile.

The HV sent me for a scan on her hips and they've turned out to be fine. I'll wait a little while and see what happens.

DS was 13mths for crawling, 15mths for pulling up and he walked at 19mths. I put it down to being very tall and very chilled.

DS did a sort of commando crawl from 10 months, and was walking the week of his first birthday. He never bothered with conventional crawling.

Lexilicious · 25/04/2010 22:38

Pushing with legs at 2m (supported, obviously)
Didn't bother rolling.
Sitting at 5m.
tummy shuffling at 6.5m
crawling a few paces at 7m
pulling up and standing at 7.5
crawling bloody everywhere at 8
standing with one hand free at 8.5
now nearly 9 and cruising around the furniture, kneeling, but often decides to go somewhere by crawling when he could probably cruise.

However... he is so keen on moving that he bumps his head or topples over in some way EVERY day. I am forever picking up and kissing it better (oh what a hardship )

blueshoes · 25/04/2010 22:47

dd - 9 months
ds - 6 months
They both walked at 13 months though.

plonker · 25/04/2010 22:48

My eldest dd didn't crawl at all.
She walked around 11mo but couldn't pull herself up to stand - she could only walk if you put her on her feet
She finally crawled and pulled herself up when she was around 14mo

My second dd crawled at 11mo and pulled herself up and walked about 2 weeks later.

My third dd (incidently my heaviest child) crawled at around 7 months, pulled herself up and cruised a week later and walked at 9mo.

All very very different.
All very active children now

pooka · 25/04/2010 22:51

dd - 8.5 months crawling. Cruising from about 10 months. Walking at 12 months.

ds1 - 8 months crawling. Cruising from 9 months. Walking from 12 months.

ds2 - 7.5 months crawling. Has just started pulling himself up to stand. Is nearly 8 months.

DS2 has spent way more time on his tummy than the older 2, because he seemed to enjoy it. They loathed it.

Apparently I crawled at 6 months from one room to another to try and get at the cat food. My mother put all of us to sleep on our fronts, so we had very strong neck and arm muscles.

SuperflousBuns · 25/04/2010 23:46

My DD started crawling at 6.5 months and started pulling herself up and walking around the furniture only 2 weeks after that.
She'll be 9 months old on Tuesday, and think she will walk pretty soon.
She has always been very 'sturdy', she even held her head up and turned round to look at someone when she was just 9 days old!!!

They are all just so different and get ther in their own time.

Clary · 25/04/2010 23:57

Can she bear weight on her feet (I mean if you lift her up does she put her feet down)?

That's the only thing that matters really.

Not all babies crawl at all. The average to walk is 15mo so there's time yet for her to start pulling up as well.

Try putting things on a low table for her to stand up to.

Also don't worry about other babies.

BackOffMargery · 25/04/2010 23:59

My DD is nearly 10 months and not crawling.
She has just learnt to roll onto her front from her back, mostly when I am changing her nappy. She then starts trying to get to things by pushing a bit forward on her tummy. But no moves towards crawling. I think she does the same thing as your DD when she is sitting. She also launches herself at me when she is sitting next to me.

My DS is 2.5yrs and didn't walk till 23 months. He bum shuffled (can't remember when he started) and crawled 2 months before he walked. He pulled himself up at 14 months. But he has hypertensive joints so saw a physio.

To echo others, they are all very different and do get there in the end

Irons · 26/04/2010 11:32

Eviebear, I hope you feel better reading all this because it just proves how very different they all are.

Don't worry about the next milestone, she'll be all grown up before you know it.

traceybath · 26/04/2010 11:35

DS1 never crawled - bottom shuffled and pulled himself up at about 11 months and then walked at 13 months.

DS2 - very relaxed baby - never crawled, bottom shuffled/cruised at about 12 months, walked at 16 months, pulled himself up at about 18 months - did everything back to front.

DD - crawling at 7 months, pulling herself up and cruising at 9 months.

Massive variations in my house

comewhinewithme · 26/04/2010 11:39

My dd is 11 months and is rolling around on her tummy and sort of crawling backwards.
Over the weekend she has attempted pulling herself up on things (me mostly) .

ShowOfHands · 26/04/2010 11:39

Oh they're all so different aren't they? I think personality also plays a part. DD would not have been prostrate if there was another option. So as soon as she could stand she did. Crawling she was never interested in, too nosy. She stood at 7 months and was cruising soon after. At about 11 months she was happy to walk. But she wouldn't have crawled if you put chocolate buttons down in a line. Well, red peppers really, her favourite food back then. She was just odd.

EvieBear · 27/04/2010 18:36

Great- yes- the differences are huge so it definitely makes me see that there is no particular progression towards crawling!

Thanks for the replies- mumsnet is great

My DS was a little slow with the gross motor skills.

6 months - sat independently
9 months - stood up holding on
10 months - started commando crawling
11 months - learned to take weight on hands and knees, and from there managed to get himself into sitting position
11.5 months - starting pulling-up
12.5 months - finally started normal crawling
13 months - started cruising
15.5 months - a few independent steps
16 months - hooray, finally walking

He was the last in his room at nursery to walk and I got so sick of people asking whether he was crawling/walking yet. I was getting really worried, but was reassured (a bit) by things I read on here and also by the nursery staff who said they didn't think it was unusually late.

I did speak to the HV at 9.5 months who told me I had to make him take steps holding my hands . He refused to do this until he was about 14 months.

He's quite a tall boy (medium build) and he was also quite content sitting playing with his toys when he was a baby. He's also quite cautious though. So I don't know if it's his size, his personality or maybe genetics which made him a bit slow with the physical milestones.

Since he learned to walk, he's become a lot harder work and now I miss my lovely contented sitting baby .
