do any parents out there have very tall babies/children, my DD is 10 months and as tall as a 17 month old. am wondering if she might "slow down" as she gets older?

Mine is 11 mo and wearing 18-24 months clothes, so would also like to know the answer!

I have two tall children, and they were tall (well long) as babies too. But as dh and I are tall it's not very surprising. Children always seem to grow in fits and starts though, so you may find that there will be times when they grow like Topsy and then times when others catch up. I'd ask your mum and your MIL what you and your dh (and siblings) were like as babies/toddlers to get an idea of possible patterns for your babies.

As an idea for the future, dd is now 9 and just growing out of size 12 clothes at the moment. ds (also tall as a baby) is 10 and also in size 12 clothes.

My DD1 is 25 months and in age 3-4. DD2 is only 10 weeks but her feet are already at the bottom of her 0-6m gro-bag! I guess I just have tall babies!

My 19 yr old was a tall baby (i am 6 foot his dad is 5f 7") he slowed down at about 13 - he is now about 5f 10"...i am still expecting him to grow a couple of inches

My 7 yr old is massive - 135cm - tall enough not to use a booster and the same height as my sisters 11 yr old (although he is a small 11 YR old!) ...he was a tall baby

mrsflux · 24/04/2010 10:27

my ds is 1.. he's in a mixture of 12-18 month (on the small side now), 18-24 months and 2-3years clothes! he has a VERY long body.

neither me nor dh are tall, and weren't tall babies either, not sure where it comes from???

My ds was a very tall baby and now he's 2.8 and is still very tall. I took my friend's little 4yr old to school the other day with my ds and he was as tall or taller than most of the 4 yr olds there. He is in age 3-4 clothes and looks quite a bit older because of his size. It doesn't really cause me any worry though, he's on 98th centile for both height and weight so he is in proportion. The only thing that does worry me is that people who don't know him tend to have very high expectations of him assuming he's older. I remember when he was 7 months old someone asking me if he was walking yet.... . He was only potty trained a few months ago and people have make comments about a boy of his age being in nappies (firstly when he was 18 months old) and I had to justify why my baby was still in nappies which annoyed me. Not that it was anything to do with them!!

realfreedom · 25/04/2010 18:28

DS was a v. tall baby and still is a v. tall toddler - has always been above 95th centile for height, and consistently at about 60th for weight. While I was pregnant, OB asked me if my DH was tall when measuring my bump (DH and family all v. tall, but I am very short!).

I do get annoyed by what meanjoe has described - I was getting asked why he was not potty trained from about 16 months on. Was also told off for having him in a stroller when he "should be walking by himself at that age!" --- he was barely cruising at that time!

4madboys · 25/04/2010 18:32

yep i have had four long babies and they are all still tall now at 10yrs, 7yrs, 5yrs and 2yrs

i have also encountered the same problemts as meanjo with people expecting too much of them because they look older than they are, very annoying but with 4 tall boys i am used to it now

DD is 4.10 and was a very healthy 9lb 4oz at birth and is now 115cms and has we've just bought new shoes in size 13. She's the tallest girl in her class. DS has just turned 2 and is in some 3-4 clothes and wears 8 shoes. He had grown out of a bugaboo carrycot at 4 months (thankfully only borrowed not bought!) DD hit most her milestones early so I was not aware of comparisons with similiar sized children but have been more aware with DS and find myself pre-empting comments by volunteering his age!

I'm 5' 11 1/2" and remember hating my height at school. I was in size 9 adult shoes by 11 and had to wear men's Jesus sandals in the summer because my mum couldn't find women's sandals to fit me. I will do everything in my power to prevent my children from feeling like I did...

CarGirl · 25/04/2010 19:21

My dd2 was so tall at birth she was off the centile charts, she reached the 98th centile for height at about 6 months and has stayed there!

It's very expensive having tall childre

The 2 younger ones were also tall at birth but one has settled around the 70th centile (at 5ish) and the youngest around the 60th (at 2ish).

Tis all dh's fault he is 6'3" and stopped growing at 14 years old

TattyCatty · 25/04/2010 19:33

My DD is 4.2 and is off the chart for height, currently measuring a rather statuesque 115cm tall and moving into age 6-7 clothes. Similar to Realfreedom, the sonographer at our 20 week scan asked how tall both me and DH are (5ft8 and 6ft respectively), and then nodded and said "ah, that makes sense then".

CarGirl · 25/04/2010 19:42

I'm very short too 5' and yes when people see the dds and I together they think they are older than they really are, they are also young ones in the school year but look like the oldest ones IYSWIM.

Omg I am so glad I have read this! I think I'm the only one stressing about height! When DD was born the first comment from the midwife was "isn't she long". When DS was born the first comment from the midwife was "hes ready for school". It is insensitive, people wouldn't comment on weight, but height is fair game! Im 5'11" and DH is 6'2/3". I believe there is stuff that can be done at a later date related to puberty if appropriate. Maybe something to look into in due course. I am worried for DD in particular being 6'0" plus but I have to try so hard, and will have to try so hard, not to make it an issue for her when I am stressing about it inside cause I just want her to be confident and happy. I never thought having a girl would be so stressful which is awful and I don't think it is right how physical appearance seems to matter so much. I am less worried about DS because I think it is more acceptable for a man to be tall. I think reading this back the height issue says more about my lack of confidence about being tall!!!
