Hi, my dd is 7, will be 8 in August. A few months ago I noticed the beginnings of breasts and last week I noticed that she has begun to grow pubic hair. She also occasionally has slight BO. I'm gutted that she seems to be starting puberty so very early. Is this normal? She's a very tall girl, healthy weight. Is it time I should have 'the talk' with her or could anyone recommend a book which may help. Many thanks in advance. XX

School nurse will have all the leaflets and info aimed at children, but you can also contact you GP about "Precocious puberty", I think its called.

The "talk" at this stage can be about needing to wash daily, and about coping with periods rather than full-blown protective sex stuff!!!

Its often hereditary to start puberty early - did you start young?

I would take her to the doctor. She is very young to be starting. Poor thing.

Hmmm... thanks, I think I will take her to the doctors. We don't have a school nurse so it has to be the doctors really I suppose. I've explained to her about the need to shower properly every day, which she does. I was a very late developer which is why its a bit of a shock that this is happening!!! My poor baby! thanks for your advice. x

To mumtokatie
My daughter started getting pubic hair at 6 and 3/4. Its called premature addrenache. My daugher saw our local GP and was sent to hospital to see an endocrinologist for blood test and xrays to check her true bone age. She then had yearly tests and is now nearly 12 and nothing else has happened yet, no periods and breast developement has only just started. So don't worry too much, its just the addrennal glands getting ready for puberty, and periods etc might happen at the normal expected age.
