crying vs sickiness

My four week old ds is crying and getting himself into quite a state. He is being breast fed approx 20 mins every 3 hours but I keep being told he might be having a growth spurt so I feed him more often but he then starts being sick more so then I worry that I am feeding him too much and only doing so to stop him from crying. Seem to be in a bit of a never ending circle and not really sure what to do for the best any suggestions or advice I would be very greatful. Thank You

Is he asking to be fed more often? (by the crying?) iyswim? Have you spoken to the HV at all? If not i would have a chat with them. have you ruled out any other reasons for the crying? - could be that the breast comforts him & stops him crying, but doesn't solve the problem.
Some babies do however bring up a bit of milk anyway.

Thanks Woobie. I did mention it to the HV but just keep being told it is a growth spurt. I think that the crying is poss just hunger, he always brings up some milk but seems to be much more in one go when I feed him more often. I think I am just weary of over feeding - if there is such a thing?

I'm no expert but I've always been told you can't overfeed a bf baby! 20mins every 3 hrs for a 4wk old doesn't sound v much tbh so wouldn't have thought you are overfeeding even if there is such a thing! My ds was feeding for about 30mins every 1-2hrs at that age (but then he was a bit of a boob monster )

Have you been eating anything different that could be making him be a bit more sicky? DS wasn't particularly reactive to what I ate but if I had some things e.g baked beans he would be more upset than usual.

Perhaps if it continues see your gp?

I agree with cassell. I wouldn't worry about over feeding if EBF. I was told by my BF support worker, that if they take in more than they need, it'll either be pooed out or they're sick up what they don't need. - Doesn't mean they won't want to keep feeding though!!
My DS was pretty much as Cassell's. At 4 months he was feeding approx every 2 - 2 1/2 hours (with more frequent ones occaisionlly.)- Big growth spurt.
Even now at 7 months, eating 3 meals a day, he still wants boob about 5 times a day! I just go with what he wants. They're too young to be greedy & will only feed if they think they need it. (Remember it could be thirst too whe they're BF.)

Thank you cassell and Woobie, will stop worrying about over-feeding so much!
