Pls help with weaning advice for friend stranded abroad

Ladies, I've had an email from my friend who is stranded in the Canaries without her parenting books or mumsnet. She is at a delicate stage in weaning her six-month and has asked my advice but my youngest is 3 and I can't remember!

  1. She started weaning her ds three weeks ago and he is on 3 purees a day. How many milk feeds should he be having?

  2. She's also starting to bottle feed. How should she make up formula? She hasn't got a kettle. Is it safe to use mineral water?

All advice very gratefully received!

Goodness she took on a lot whilst being away!

I think ..... Evian water is OK for the bottles of formula and I think at this stage if weaning the number of milk feeds should be about the same as previously somewhere between 4 and 5?

Hope this is a help

Can she look for cartons of ready mix formula in the supermarkets - they do sell it in the Canaries.

Also, at six months, his food should be an extra to the milk so she should just stick to his normal amount plus the food on top.

Mineral water is not suitable for formula - for a start it's not sterile but also it can have high levels of minerals in which babies can't tolerate (or so I was told by my friend who is a flight attendant who took her baby travelling).

at 6 months ds still had 5 milk feeds but one was in the night - food was on top of the milk rather than a replacement at that stage. You can use bottled water for formula feeds but choose one with the lowest sodium content and still boil it before using.

bottle feeding on holiday

I would carry on breast feeding until her holiday is over, just for convenience, in her situation. But if she's really set on it, can't she buy a cheap kettle? Or ready made formula?

If there isn't a kettle, can't she just boil water in a saucepan? I'd never seen a kettle until I was in my twenties and I still managed to have cups of tea throughout my childhood.
