15 month old doing odd things with eyes

Hi

I am not really sure how to describe what my ds does really. It started about 2 or 3 weeks ago when he would lower his eyes lids and have a look of 'I'm bored' on his face but for a minute rather than a few seconds. He used to do this when he was tired (mostly when at the table eating) but over the past 3 weeks it has developed into more. Yesterday, we were on skype to my dh who is currently abroad and although it is usually a mutual love fest, my ds kept fluttering his eyes (in a worrying rather than cute fashion) and acted all floppy and tired. We stopped the conversation and I put ds to bed but he wouldn't sleep and didn't sleep for another 2 hours...

I between he seems normal enough - he's climbing and starting to walk.

My dh thinks I should take him to the doctor but I am wondering if there is any point - it is highly unikely he will do it when we are with the dr. That said I am slightly concerned.

Can anyone reassure me with what he may be doing/what may be wrong? I have just read this back and it doesn't sound bad but nursery mentioned he's doing it last week. I'm not sure if it is at all related but he also hits himself over the head - with his hand or toy - quite frequently. Is that normal?

Many thanks in advance

I would take him to be checked out in case he is having absences (epilepsy related), which seem quite common, and not necessarily worrying.

Don't want you to get all worried though..it is probably something else! I would just talk to GP though.

He could even just be at a fighting sleep stage!!

My DD has absences which involve eye flickering. I would ask your doctor but be firm about it because we were not taken seriously at first. He will need an EEG (DD finds these fun!)to be sure.

She has at least one a minute when her meds need upping. This means she is sort of drifting in and out of reality which is very difficult for her.

The best way not to worry is to get it checked out.

Good luck

Thanks. I didn't want to go to the doctor and just be vague. I wasn't sure if there were any tests they could do at such a young age.

They can do an EEG, which won't hurt him at all.

Thanks. I am quite worried about it - but am reassured that he seems OK the rest of the time. He does fight sleep but I just get the feeling it is something else and it has definately been increasing over the past weeks.

Perhaps the banging of his head is something completely unrelated. He is a bit of a nutter (a lovely one at that )

At least if it is anything, you have been on the ball and spotted it very early!

havinganightin · 18/04/2010 10:05

Thanks for the reassurance. I will make an appointment tomorrow and see if I can get it on video if he does it today.

As you say, most probably nothing but it will be good to know ...

How are things? Have you been to the docs yet?

Hi

Thanks for the interest.

I thought I would wait until my husband gets home (he's stranded in China at the mo!) and he can either go with me or I will have caught it on video (still haven't - too quick!)

A few friends have seen him do it and don't think it is anything to be worried about - one suggested it could be hay fever but I am still not sure.

Am I a negligent mummy for not taking him this week? We have been rather busy doing fun stuff ...

It will only be a GP appointment for now. He or she will refer you.

Don't blame you for wanting to do fun stuff though... the weather is glorious!

Hope your hubby gets home soon, I've heard long haul flights will be a priority. Let us know how you get on won't you?
