At what age did you put your newborn to 'bed'

i.e in another room, or upstairs during the evening??

DS2 is 8 weeks tomorrow and BF every 2 ish hours although is sleeping longer between 7-10pm. I feel a bit bad that he is with me in his cocoon in front of the telly just so I can keep and eye on him and to be honest enjoy time just with him after a day of my toddler getting all my attention it feels like!! I do think though the noise of the TV, washing machine etc must be a bit annoying for him, all the lights are off but its not the same as being in a bedroom.

What do you think?

When he was about 3 months old... That was when he started to develop his own 'routine' and I realised it was easier for him to sleep upstairs so we can bang about watch TV downstairs without being scared of waking him up.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 15/04/2010 20:38

When I noticed she was being annoyed and disturbed by the npise of the TV! She was about 2 months.

I think at about 8 weeks old with both children, but for very different reasons.

With my first child it was because he was feeding all the time, I was exhausted and I thought 'right, I need to start a routine'.

With my second child, this was about the age she naturally started to fall asleep in my arms / her moses basket and I would transfer her upstairs.

We first put DD to 'bed' at 13 weeks. I also felt a bit guilty keeping her down with me. I felt she would be more comfortable and less disturbed in her cot. She stayed in our room until 6 months though. TBH I think we could have started taking her up sooner (about 8 weeks like you) but DH was nights at the time, and I used to like having her down with me.

I started putting DS to bed about a month ago when he started fussing tiredly at 7 and sleeping until 9/10pm instead of feeding all evening. He was 5mo.

PDog · 15/04/2010 21:24

About 10/11 weeks - when DD stopped cluster feeding and started sleeping for longer streches.

tryingtobemarrypoppins2 · 15/04/2010 21:29

Thanks ladies.......i'll make the most of the next few weeks, sometimes I feel like I only really get to look at him properly in the evening! 2nd time round is certainly different!

My DD got put to bed within the first week! We started as we meant to go on and she has always been a great sleeper. Bath, book, bosom and bed, every night for 13mo now. (and all in her own room as well, she only shared with us for 1 night...)

bumbums · 15/04/2010 21:42

I'd say that cos your DS is settling and sleeping at 7pm you could settle her up stairs and start a bed time.
However, they grow up so fast and in a few months these cosy evenings will naturally come to an end. So enjoy! Cuddle and watch him all you want!!
My children are 2.11yrs and 13mths and I wish I could stop time.

MrsJohnDeere · 15/04/2010 21:55

Ds1 at about 10 weeks (in hindsight wish i'd done it earlier).
Ds2 on day 2 (first night home from hospital).

mummywizz · 15/04/2010 22:02

DD was 5months before we put her to bed upstairs (basically because we didn't know what we were doing) but with DS comes experience and he went to bed at around 6 weeks (with baby alarm) and lots of trips upstairs to 'check'

fulltimeworkingmum · 15/04/2010 22:12

6 weeks - stopped wanting overnight feeding and into her cot in her own room (with baby monitor, obviously) Utter blissful sleep for DD, DH and me. Same again with DS 21 months later. My sister believes in keeping them with you all the time - she has not had a proper nights sleep in 4 years...need I say more?

specialmagiclady · 15/04/2010 22:15

You may find he likes the noise! I found DS2 slept much better with Radio 4 on in the room. The only problem was when I did a feed at 11.30 during Ross Noble as i couldn't keep boob in mouth due to giggling.

heth1980 · 16/04/2010 08:23

DD1 was 12 weeks when we started a proper routine to get her into bed for 7ish. It happened with DD2 at around 2 weeks.....she was naturally falling asleep at around 6.30 without us having to introduce any kind of routine.

castille · 16/04/2010 08:28

Not until they didn't need an evening feed.

Before that we let them nap of play downstairs until we went to bed, so their main block of sleep coincided with ours.

Shaz10 · 16/04/2010 08:30

When we realised we were waking him up for a feed around 10/11. We put him to bed at 7 instead and he slept through! Think it was 4 or 5 months.

M78 · 16/04/2010 08:36

At around 15 weeks, she used to be really unsettled in the evening and I used to keep her in my arms up to 10pm until one night I decided to try and put her down in her cot and she slept until 2am, which was unheard of!
