My 2yo dd has had temp of about 39 degrees c all day; she went to sleep about 7, and is now feeling very hot. Should I wake her to give her calpol to try to reduce her temperature (she was due a dose at 8.30pm) or just let her sleep .............?? help!

wake her
ididn't do this and had to take DS to a&E. Drs told me I should keep the doses regular. If it was me, I would definitely be waking her.

Hope she feels better soon

Madigan · 14/04/2010 21:56

ok thanks will wake her now.
why did you end up in a&e?

Do you need to wake her to give her the calpol?

We give ous ds's medicine in syringes and can just slowly squirt it into their mouths when they're sleeping if necessary.

Hope she's better soon.

P.S. You do know that you can alternate calpol and ibuprofen if you need to don't you?

GhostInTheBackOfYourHead · 14/04/2010 22:00

Because DS's temp spiked alarmingly and he was behaving very oddly indeed. Was very scary and felt so guilty that I could have prevented it. Still, I learnt something and now I'm passing it onto you, so that's A Good Thing.

DS was about 15 months iirc.

GhostInTheBackOfYourHead · 14/04/2010 22:01

oh yes, keep alternating

and we do the syringe too. Sorry, a bit tired to think straight.

Madigan · 14/04/2010 22:02

ok - just gave her calpol and will do ibuprofren at 1am ............
thank you VERY much for advice x

Dd had gentile
convulsions and I always wake if has a temp and
asleep. Thankfully has grown out of convulsions.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 14/04/2010 22:23

No problem Madigan. Hope she has a good night.

mummynumnum - do you mean febrile convulsions - fits caused by an excessively high temperature?!

Madigan · 15/04/2010 07:36

thank you again you two for urgent advice last night! So appreciated! I medicated DD every 3 hours (alternating calpol and ibuprofren) and this morning her temperature is back to normal - what a relief.
Thanks again x

glad to hear she is better, now you just need a rest!

GhostInTheBackOfYourHead · 15/04/2010 07:56

oh and rofl at mummynumnum's gentile convulsions. sorry!

seeker · 15/04/2010 08:00

They are the non kosher ones presumably!

Had you considered getting an ear thermometer thing so you can take her temperature while she's asleep? Might this reassure you?

I don't take temperatures so I've never used one, but I know people who do swear by the ear ones.

multimummy · 15/04/2010 08:09

I was also going to suggest giving the medicine gently by syringe. If my children are sleeping i sit them on my knee and do this while they're semi upright.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 15/04/2010 20:16

Glad I could help and it's great to hear she's better.

xx
