Two year old sickness and diarrhea

Hi,

My son had a bout of sickness last Tuesday which lasted only for the morning. He recovered well from that. Then on Sunday morning he began vomiting and didn't stop for a further 14 hours. We took him to IDOC and the doctor checked him over and sent us home. He finally began passing urine by late evening. He vomited only once yesterday morning and although extremely tired recovered a little throughout the remainder of the day and went on to have a good night's sleep.

This morning he projectile vomited after breakfast and has had terrible diarrhea since. He has managed to keep down a small snack but getting fluids in him is difficult and just comes out the other end. There is a small amount of urine coming through however.

I am concerned because he has now lost a lot of weight and still lethargic and we are on day 3. Should I be taking him back to the doctor or is the fact that he is passing urine enough?

I would probably go back to the doctor just to be sure. Some of these sickness bugs are really horrid. Hope he's feeling better soon.

my daughter, who turned 3 2 weeks ago, has just had this. She was either sick or had diarrhea for 7 days and lost loads of weight. She was extremely lethargic and didn't speak the entire time. During that time i took her to the GP once and phoned NHS Direct once. Both told me just to persevere as she wasn't dehydrated. They turned out to be right as she got better just like that and ate like a horse for two weeks! She put all the weight back on after about 3 days. It was a horrible time but she is fine now. Hope he gets better soon.

Thanks for the support. We're managing to get some fluids into him now, he is a little bit more cooperative. He is sleeping less than yesterday as well. Like you Molk, I think we will persevere with it.

Thanks again

my dd (2.7) has this was sick solidly for 7 days. Everything came up, even the tiniest bit of water. Mix a sachet of diorylite with every drink, and try and make each drink sugary (flat cola is good) as it injects a bit of energy into the body, and even the smallest bit of energy aids digestion. dd was so lethargic, and like Molk said, didn't speak just cried when she wanted something and slept lots, or just stared into space.

sadly for us the vomiting quickly turned to diarrhoea and we are now on day 3 of diarrhoea with occasional vomiting. d is better in herself though, and at least is eating now. She has lost a huge amount of weight though, she is just skin and bones

The doctors weren't incredibly helpful TBH. They just check for dehydration and if your child is dehydrated they just send you home again. The worry is when they start to dehydrate as they can go downholl ver quickly - watch out for dry mouth and lips, no tears when crying, sin that doesn't ping back when pinched (particularly on the chest area) , fingers and toes that stay white for more than a second or two when squeezed, oh and not passing urine for loooong amounts of time, and it being very dark in colour.

On day 3 of the sickness dd had brown/orange urine, and only went every 7 hours or so, and she still wasn't dehydratd, so they are resilient little souls.

Only you know your child though, and if you are at all concerned, call the doctors. We had two check ups by the doctor and spent a couple of hours in A&E on about day 6.

Hope your little one gets over it quicker than mine
