Eczma - Cream that works????

Barbles · 13/04/2010 09:50

Probably in the wrong topic but here goes

My DD has got awful eczma, we have had hospital appointments, docs appointments and so many lotions and potions but it clears up for a few days then returns and the creams seem not to work anymore.

Luckly it doesnt itch but we are potty training and when she has an accident she screams as it stings the eczma on her legs. Im hoping the sun will help it clear up (mine does in the summer) but i need to do something else.

Can anyone recommend a cream that works?

Have you looked into diet???

My DD was diagnosed with Excema & had the same problem with creams not working, but thanks to info from a friend who works in Childrens alternative medicine, realised it wasn't excema at all, but urticaria caused by intolerance to food colourants & preservatives...google Azo Dyes & Benzoate preservatives, as they tend to be the biggest culprits, though DD also has problems with MSG, & sweetners too......... they pop up in all sorts, even though we knew DDs problem & therefore her nursery did, she once ended up with a bad ongoing flare up, because they were giving her bagels as at snack time, they thought they were fresh baked, but contained the preservative as they go off quicker due to extra sugar.

if you are still breast feeding, as I was at the time, it can be what YOU are eating, & its passing through your milk to DD,

If you've already lookied into that possibility, then there is a herbal cream, Zambesia Botanicus (I think) , or Sausage Tree cream, (herbalist or good health food shop) its brilliant stuff for Skin problems, & it works well on true Excema too, I've an American friend whose DD has true Excema & she always stocks up on it for her DD when she visits, as it works better than anything else for her DDs ....its not cheap, but spreads thinly, so lasts a long time, so does work out cheap.

Also, my DD used to get bad flare ups in her groin & top of legs, & like your would howl when she wee'd........ I used Metanium cream as a barier on advice of our chemist...also brilliant stuff

good luck, I feel for you, I remember how awful it was...thankfully DD now has beautiful skin, never has a problem, bar the odd minor flare up if she eats anything with artificial colours at parties etc

Thanks, I have considered her diet but sort of never knew where to start so may have a good look on it and see if there is anything I can do there.

Ive had eczma form a young age and my mother always said i would get it worse if i had lots of dairy like yogurts etc which my DD does so i think im going to have to cut it out and see if there is any improvement.

She has it bad on the tops of her legs under her bum, all her creases and on her wrists. I am lucky she doesnt itch but it stil isnt nice for her.

Thanks for the advice.

Have you tried the Dream Cream from Lush? My DD (8m) has mild eczema, I saw this cream and read really positive reviews on their website so thought I'd try it. Its worked wonders, DD still has eczema but its gone down quite a lot and her skin doesnt look as dry and red as it used to be.

Also the advise about diet is good too, I hadnt thought of that.

I found pawpaw ointment works best for my DD. The Lucas one is petroleum jelly based, which acts as a good skin barrier as well.

My DD had really bad eczema on her neck (from dribble). She would often scratch at night until it bled. The steroid cream from the GP helped a little, but the pawpaw ointment did so much more.

You can get it from www.pawpawshop.co.uk/

Hi, my son is suffering at the moment too. He is 6 and hasn't been able to do his school holiday homework yet as the cracks on his hands are making it too painful for him to hold a pencil. Lush dream cream is quite good for mild eczema and shea butter is great too. We are using steroid creams and wet wrapping at the moment as its so bad. Roll on the summer. We hate spring in this house. Pollens cause flare ups of eczema for my son and affecting his asthma a lot too. Good luck

smileybridge · 13/04/2010 18:17

Aveeno Lotion or Cream!!!!
My son went through every lotion and ointment going but i did a bit of research and found that in the states this stuff is often used as its an oat based product and its fantastic! Since using it my son hasnt had any flare ups and his skin is lovely and soft all year round.
Ive found it in Superdrug and waitrose.
Give it a try.

AlicesWonderland · 13/04/2010 18:28

don't know but am just marking this as ds has had eczema since he was a baby and it was quite bad but always isolated to certain patches and would go with treatment but return and always went away in the summer month

anyway two years ago igt just went and never came back not sure why but thought fab, he's 8 now and it's just come back really badly all over his privates and legs

He has been given a cortizone (sp?) cream that's o.5% for the realy red sore bits like he used to and an aqueous cream for the rest, been using this for a week on Thurs and it's still sore and inflamed and is now spreading to the rest of his body I's say it's pretty much everywhere now bar his face, hands and feet

Shaz10 · 13/04/2010 18:30

Everyone reacts differently to the creams, I have eczema myself and the Aqueous cream and E45 type stuff is useless to me. I get on well with Dream Cream and Aveeno. You just have to work your way through everything till you get the one that works. Have you tried olive oil?

grumpypants · 13/04/2010 18:33

we use aveeno cream, and get it on prescription. Chocolate makes the ds' eczema much much worse, but they also had dairy/lactose allergies/ intolerances diagnosed early on which they are growing out of. Goats milk has been fab rather than cows milk, but I wouldn't recommend anything without having professional advice.

renderedspeechless · 13/04/2010 18:40

i used aveeno after reading reccommendations on mn. has worked brilliantly so im delighted with results. if in uk your doctor should be able to prescribe it.

presario · 13/04/2010 20:46

I have bad eczema as does my son.

I cut out cows milk and use bio-oil

took a wee while but all clear

Barbles · 13/04/2010 22:39

Thanks guys, I'm off to Lush tomorrow to have a look at this dream cream and havent heard of Aveeno before so will give that a go too. Poor little mite, it seems to be getting worse rather than better at the moment. ive been here scratching my legs all night. i just thank god her's doesnt seem to be itchy.

Aveeno Aveeno Aveeno......... You must try it. So far it's the only thing that have worked for my DS 17m.

Amani · 14/04/2010 09:16

Both my DDs have had sever eczema since they were born and they had tried a wide spectrum of creams ranging from Diprobase, Doublebase , 50-50 Liquid Paraffin etc but the one that we find the best is Aveeno and as mentioned you can get it on prescription (we go through 6 tubes a fortnight). We've also seen consultants at various hospitals for allergy testing (inconclusive) - but it might be worth pursuing it. They've both been in/out patients at the dermatology units for wet wrapping treatments which was very effective.

Barbles · 14/04/2010 09:22

I think i may go and buy some Aveeno and see if it works. If it does i'll go to the docs for a prescription. is it just the moisturising lotion you use or the skin relief one?

vnmum · 14/04/2010 09:39

Aveeno again for us. we used to get it on prescription along with the bath oil. we stocked up that much on it that we have loads left and it was the only thing that worked for DS. anything that contained lanolin made him redder and we had tried aqueos cream and many others i cant remember the name of.

If anyone has access to costco they have special offer packs of 3 bottles of the aveeno lotion for about £6. considering its usually about £7 per tube in boots i thought it was a bargain had we actually needed some, lol.

Barbles · 14/04/2010 09:45

we dont have a costco here in cornwall, i looked on the superdrug page and there it is advertised on the home page lol. DD and myself cant have anything with lanolin either. I used to use E45 for myself but have found these days it makes my skin tight and itchy and it didnt do anything for DD. I'm actually looking forward to trying this out as I have had loads of positve reviews from people (asked on another parenting site too and everyone said Aveeno or Dream Cream).

It seems to be more common than i thought in DDC's.

catski · 14/04/2010 11:38

Which Aveeno do people use as there are several?

youremindmeofthebabe · 14/04/2010 16:08

We use a bodyshop hemp moisturiser for hands. very rich and good for us, but not too greasy.
It is quite expensive though if you have a large area to cover. Likewise there's a St Ives Body one that is quite good. And occasionally bio-oil in the bath.Just some alternative thoughts

My partner won't use the lush cream, as for him it stings really badly( his eczema is stress related and very sore/cracked).
