Toddler sleeping on her bedroom floor.

DD (23mths) has only been out of her cot for a couple of weeks. When I check on her before I go to bed she is generally asleep on the floor and the same when I go to get her in the morning.

The first thing she usually says to me in the morning is 'I sleep on floor!'

It is an Ikea toddler bed an I don't think a bed rail will fit.

Is it just a phase do you think? Should I even be worrying about it as long as she is sleeping?

If she is sleeping all night and not bothered by it that you can see then I wouldn't worry.

I think a lot of children do it.

KickArseQueen · 09/04/2010 10:23

Is she rolling out or is she getting out?

Can't you put a piece of furniture next to the bed if a bed guard won't fit?

I'm sure there are other children who sleep on the floor but I would want mine in their nice comfy bed...

Link us a pic of the bed can you?

ds1 used to do it, now he is 4 and sleeps on the top bunk absolutely fine, she'll outgrow it

ppeatfruit · 09/04/2010 10:30

Do you make a comfy 'out of bed' on the floor for her? just put a duvet and or blakets where she sleeps and if she's in a cosy sleep suit it's not a problem then.

Besom · 09/04/2010 12:58

this is the bed. So the mattress fits snug into the wooden frame.

I think she gets out rather than rolls out, because I still have the monitor on and the one time she fell out, I heard her quite clearly.

As I type, she is having a nap on her bedroom floor with her bum stuck up in the air.

I'll dig out an old duvet and put it down on the floor I think. She does wear a sleep suit and it's getting warmer. It has been cold where we live and that was part of my worry.

My DS2 would sleep anywhere, except in his bed, for a couple of years. As long as she's warm enough, she'll be fine.

MrsWobbleTheWaitress · 09/04/2010 13:04

Does it matter if she sleeps on the floor?

FalafelAtYourFeet · 09/04/2010 13:05

If she was too cold she'd wake up and get back in surely? My DD used to do this a lot, when we first bought her a bed she liked to swap about, sometimes sleeping with her head one side, sometimes the other, sometimes on the floor, and sometimes chose to sleep UNDER the bed! (not funny the first time she did this I can tell you, imagine my horror when going in to check on her!)

TulipsInTheRain · 09/04/2010 13:06

ds1 did this all last summer.

he slept on the stairs a few times too and once he fell before we found him there and hurt his head badly

another time i found him asleep on the floor in dd's room.

he stopped doing it after a while though.

AuntieMaggie · 09/04/2010 13:13

my nephew did this for a while - sometimes we'd find him half led in the wardrobe or something asleep.

i think they just grow out of it.

dilbertina · 09/04/2010 13:17

yep, my ds & dd insisted on the floor for a while - I left them to it - they grew out of it after a few weeks.

runnybottom · 09/04/2010 13:21

My DS1 slept under his bed on the floor for about six months @ around 2.5 Usually bare-arsed.

He stopped one day as suddenly as he started and never did it again. Kids are weird.

EarthMotherImNot · 09/04/2010 13:21

Our grandson used to pull the duvet off his bed and drag the mattress upright until it leaned against the wall at an angle. We used to find him asleep on the base of the bed in the gap with his duvet pulled in after him

He was about 3 years old and when quizzed about his nocturnal habit he appeared to have no recollection of doing any of it.

He grew out of it eventually.

Thanks for all the replies.

I'll stop worrying about it now.

DS used to do this occasionally. He stopped after a while. Hopefully it will pass for you as well.

Debs75 · 09/04/2010 13:38

My ds liked sleeping on the floor when he was little and he isn't keen on his bed now at 11.
Don't worry about it. Some people don't like soft and comfy they prefer hard/firm surfaces. If she gets cold she will move somewhere warm. Plus if she like sleeping with her bum in the air she probably has her face squashed into the floor so a pillow and soft mattress will maybe make her feel claustraphobic
