How many times do you tell them to do stuff before they actually do it?

Sorry, I know I've got load of threads going at the moment but I feel like I'm failing miserabley at everything I try.

The title says it all really but today I have had to shout everything I asked them after the same thing was asked (as in spoken) about 5-6 times. They only way they respond, answer, do whatever I've asked is if i've shouted it at the top of my voice.

It's driving me bloody mad.

my kids perpetually think the grass is greener - that everyone - thats everyone has a better deal than them. i think the answer is plain - "its a bit of hard cheese your havin mate becuase i haven't got any money."

just lay it out like it is. if you cant do it, you cant do it. my kids never ever asked for things when we were skint. they never wore named brands and never asked to. they never complained about the £5 shoes on their feet becuase well lets face it - there was no other option. i think a 7 year old can well understand that.

re hitting you. i used to do the "wait til dad gets home i am too angry to deal with you now go to yur room thing" and my evil streak knew they would crap themselves for an hour.

i think i have learned that ignoring them deliberatley becuase people who love each other don't hit each other and when you dont feel as upset you will speak abut it.

as a catholic i find guilt works well.

Let me think ... my eldest is 21 years old ... soooooo ... 21 years!!!

(Room is still a mess, still won't clear up after herself, argues back, refuses to help out ...)

Hi there

Like everyone else I ask loads and loads and loads of times, until I remember "1-2-3 Magic" by Thomas Phelan, which contains a simple receipe to have to only ask twice, and so avoid going mad! I reread it and only have to ask twice (until I forget and go back to square one)

Sugarmag · 27/07/2005 10:51

um, care to share this 'magic' trick with the rest of us?

NotQuiteCockney · 27/07/2005 10:56

I want to hear the magic trick, too.

I do find that counting down from 5 is a good fix to whatever. Oh, and "do it, or I'll do it for you". I don't know why that works, but it does.

Even with these methods, I do get very very tired of the sound of my own voice.

school has the policy first time everytime!!!
Wish it worked at home!!!!
I have resorted to paying!!!

Twiglett · 27/07/2005 10:59

I just misread that title as 'how many times to you tell them to stuff it before they actually do"

I wanna know the magic trick though

mandyc66 · 27/07/2005 11:06

do you ever just want to make a tape recording!!!!

Crying helps too..they hate to see you cry!!!!

Think it depends on age too.

Sugarmag · 27/07/2005 11:07

hmmm, tell them to stuff it - tempting.
