6mo not rolling over

Is that anything to be worried about? She's 28 weeks, can roll onto her side to feed in bed but never even tries to go further. Same for crawling - no real interest. I'm not concerned - she's been sitting unsupported for quite a while, standing and jumping with help, but I'm just wondering if I should be??

Your DD sounds like she is doing great. Some babies aren't big rollers - or crawlers for that matter

SPBInChocolate · 02/04/2010 07:53

Yes, you're probably right, suppose some babies never really crawl! I thought they all showed an interest in rolling though DS did both these things early but then showed no interest in walking until over a year - but then he had a development check at 8mo so I knew not to worry then

Hello!
Our dd never really rolled over or crawled. She just walked at 9 months.

FrazzleRock · 02/04/2010 08:05

DS2 crawled before he could roll. Since he learnt to roll at 11 ish months, Ive really struggled to change his nappy as he gets away and is so strong!
Enjoy her while she can't get away!

SPBInChocolate · 02/04/2010 08:06

thanks mumble - i am officially not worried now then
DS had friend same age who walked at 9 months - she looked far too tiny really confused DS too

oh no
i had blanked those nappy changes out of my mind
DD will be much more placid & happy to lie there than ds was - won't she?

Lol. My dd has just hit the flipping-over-when-you-change-nappy stage. I don't mind when it's just wee, but it makes poohs a lot more awkward to deal with!

olivo · 02/04/2010 09:21

hello SPB! Snap, DD2 is the same. other than the occasional lean to the side to get something/feed in bed, she doesnt roll. she bounces well, has sat up on her own for a couple of months and mauch prefers to stand. i went to the dr cos i was a bit worried, but she said she wa fine and maybe to expect a walker, not a crawler.

TigerFeet · 02/04/2010 09:24

hi stealth

dd1 rolled over at about 20 weeks. once. and didn't do it again until about 18 months

dd2 has only rolled over a couple of times and only then by accident i reckon

some babies just aren't rollers

and yes, nappy changes are loads easier

rl mate has a boy about the same age as our babies, he is a roller, nappy changes are a nightmare esp when you factor in the boy hose effect

non rolling girls are way better

IWillNotNeverEatATomato · 02/04/2010 09:26

How often does she spend on her tummy?, because it is easier for a baby to turn from tummy to back first rather than from back to tummy,

and therefore needs to build up the muscles from a lot of time on their tummy

however they will do it eventually, after all how many adults do you know who can't roll over?

TigerFeet · 02/04/2010 09:30

dd2 will only tolerate being on her tummy for a very short time

dd1 was the same, she learned to crawl from a sitting positiong by flopping forward and supporting herself with her arms, then moving her legs round behind her - rather than pushing up from a lying position iyswim

dd2 seems to be following dd1 developmentally fairly closely

i have had identical babies 5 years apart

SPBInChocolate · 02/04/2010 12:03

yes true she has done it once but looked so startled i can only assume it was an accident
She is fine on her tummy though - have been doing it since day 1 (MW told us to!!)

on another note, i have never understood what's so much better about little girl wee! DS just used to wee on my top - quick top change required. when DD wees is goes down & forms a small lake on her mat, so it's all up her back and in her hair - bath required!!

Good point IWill about not knowing adults who can't roll not that it comes up in conversation much. Although i have said that i have never seen ds (3) roll front to back - just assuming he can

DD rolled over one way 3 times on the trot at about 4 months, then decided that it wasn't a form of locomotion, and hardly did it at all after that. She's now 14 months, and not exactly speedy with the gross motor skills (cruising and crawling but not walking unsupported), but rolls over in order to get from her back to sitting. All fine - I was obsessed about it for a while - god knows why and even tried to 'teach' her, by rolling her over in a blanket. It made not a jot of difference, but she thought it was hilarious (which, come to think of it, it was). DD was a crawler, despite her lack of enthusiasm for rolling. She sat early too. Your DD'll be fine

Minshu · 02/04/2010 22:39

Thanks for posting this, stealth! Was thinking of asking, too, as my nearly 6 mo DD has a similar lack of interest in rolling. She'll go on her tummy for longer now than she would a month or so back, but just hasn't figured out that she could use her arms for any weight bearing or pushing herself over.

Don't think she'll be sitting unsupported for a while yet, either. She loves trying to stand, though.

Drivingmisscrazy - I've tried demonstrating the whole rolling thing myself, but DD either looks worried or just laughs at me

StealthPolarBear · 03/04/2010 21:44

pmsl at the demonstrations
I draw the line at that - I'd probably squash her! I do do the "look if you put your arm here and push with this one..." and she looks at me like I'm mad!

Minshu · 03/04/2010 22:36

I've discovered that if I try to help her sit, she'll push herself forward and sideways to end up on her tummy (she's done it a couple of times now, so may not be a total fluke). Problem is that once she's there, she doesn't really know what to do with herself... Bless. They are funny little things, aren't they?

Minshu · 04/04/2010 18:40

Well - the demonstrations must have paid off - she's rolling!!

StealthPolarBear · 04/04/2010 20:14

woo hoo

off to demonstrate Well not really as she's asleep - that would be mad. I did think she was looking like she was going to roll on her front earlier today, but that was just because she was a bit wobbly!

We went to mum & dad's, they were both so well behaved, ate well and were fairly easily entertained. I had a glimpse of the future, of going to visit people and not on the endless cycle of nappies, feeds, fights and tantrums A had her first yorkshire pudding and looked very cute with a bit hanging out of her mouth and a startled look on her face

Minshu · 05/04/2010 20:38

I've been imagining a white fluffy thing rolling around the living room, trying not to squash her cub

DD's been at it again today, so not a fluke.

StealthPolarBear · 05/04/2010 21:26

Well she started doing the manic wriggling and bum sticking up that I remember DS doing about 2 months before he crawled
I did demonstrate it tonight, I was wearing the polar bear suit She was unimpressed!
