Harnessless Tripp Trapp

We have a Tripp Trapp that dd has been using since 6mo - now 11mo. She has half the babyset - just the front bar - but has recently started pushing herself right up in the chair. She doesn't have the harness, and I was wondering when/whether we're going to need the harness. Is it only for when they're too big for the front bar? Should she be harnessed in now?

I think it's always a good idea to use a harness tbh. Whatever age they are in whatever sort of chair they can fall out or tip it over somehow. Please install the harness asap!

What sort of floor do you have the chair on? I think if it's a non carpet floor you have to be aware that some children manage to push against the table and push the tripp trapp over. Just something to watch out for.

We have a cheap imitation of the TTrap and dd used the harness until she was about 3. they do fall off sideways sometimes and it's a long way down

If she can climb out of the babyset, replace with harness.

Also check her foot position. You could possibly do with it one or two notches lower.

backinaction.co.uk ? have good guide on this.

You can get harness on ebay.

Thanks all. She can't climb out of the babyset (yet!), and the footplate's on the lowest setting that her toes will touch. She does push it away from the table but we've got wooden floors so it just slides backwards. I'll get a harness for when she really outgrows the babyset.

I'm in this position as my 10 month old has just figured out how to climb out of her Tripp Trapp. Went looking at harnesses today for it and noticed that the TT chair had a plastic clip on it to attach the harness to (fits side of chair). Does anyone know if this plastic bit comes with the Tripp Trapp harness? I was hoping to get away with buying a cheaper one but can't see what to attach it to without it.

DrivenToDistraction · 30/03/2010 17:46

Yup, you get little plastic brackety bits with the harness.

mazzystartled · 30/03/2010 17:50

we are probably going to be deemed slacker parents, but we never used the harness for either of our DCs. DS was always too chunky to climb out of the babyseat, and it never occurred to him once we took it off. DD did try the escapology but we just taught her not to, but neither were left alone in their TrippTrapps. We did try to harness on DS once, but he was frankly so insulted but the suggestion at 13 months that we never bothered again.

FlyMeToDunoon · 30/03/2010 17:54

I have a babydan chair and we used a mothercare harness on it when DD2 got slightly older and could climb out or brace her feet and stand.

stealthsquiggle · 30/03/2010 17:58

We never used the harness at all - we kept the baby set on until they started to climb out, then took it off and they just had to learn to sit still.

cupcake75 · 30/03/2010 18:06

Darn. Was hoping to get away with a cheaper one.

I had hoped that my DD would continue to be held in the babyset by her bulk - I used to have to squeeze her into the chair in the beginning - but she's suddenly slimmed down. She ate her last meal sitting on the table as she refused to stay in her seat. I don't think I have the energy to keep sitting her back down in the seat, as she takes a while to grow out of her new phases.

bintofbohemia · 30/03/2010 18:06

We've never used the harness either, but we do have to strap the chair to the atble to stop him pushing it backwards. It's not the best arrangement.

Octaviapink · 30/03/2010 18:21

stealthsquiggle, how old were they when they began to climb out?

I can't remember for DS - 13-14mo, maybe (I know he was difficult to wedge into the baby thing) DD - about 11 - 12 mo because I know she was climbing (as in, push chair to worktop, climb up chair and onto worktop full of sharp knives) before she could walk

Octaviapink · 30/03/2010 18:49

Blimey, that's good going! I must admit I was hoping to avoid the harness. DD pushes herself up and wriggles around but is nowhere near being able to get out - she's too big to have the room!

With DD I seem to remember the real problem was her trying to climb in

Caz10 · 30/03/2010 22:13

DD can climb up but not down now, at 2.3yrs we're just using it as a chair iyswim, baby set completely removed. Can you use the harness without the babyset??

CultureMix · 30/03/2010 23:56

I've never used the harness on my TT, indeed I find that's one of the real pleasures of using it, just slide the baby in and out(there's the babyset of course) and makes cleanup so easy as well. Not had a problem with DS1 wanting to climb out until he was 18mo following 2 weeks Xmas holiday at the grandparents' sitting on various grownup chairs he refused to use the babyset any more -- and in fairness it had become a tight fit.

So we took the babyset off and he adapted very well, we had a couple tumbles in early days but nothing major. Only problem now is as an independent nearly-3yr-old, he can very easily climb off partway through the meal if he decides he's had enough. But that's part of social skills to be learnt regardless of chair type.

DS2 is now 10mo and very happy with his own TT + babyset, no harness there either. Personal decision of course but has worked for me.

CultureMix · 31/03/2010 00:09

ps - Oh and both babies have stood up on their chair footplate then sat back down, the bar holds them in fine (+leather strap bit between legs). That's the whole point of the TT, there's a footplate not just legs dangling. Just a chance to stretch as I see it -- although warning this does extend their reach onto the table considerately so need to set up an exclusion zone for knives/hot coffee etc.

DS1 does push himself backwards at times (wood floor so slides, don't think carpet is recommended as chair 'sticks'), we just slide him back in place. He asks for it actually as then cannot reach his plate . Have never had an issue with chair toppling, it's very stable - provided no carpet.

Never leave baby on their own though - ok just to quickly go to the kitchen fetch some milk but that's it. DS1 on the other hand now climbs in and out at will, sometimes even pushes the TT over to the kitchen counter to reach worktop.

BertieBotts · 31/03/2010 00:30

I haven't got one but it looks as though a set of reins would fit on just fine, assuming they have the right kind of attachment.

These ones do - they have little straps which are designed to be threaded around anything rather than plastic clips which attach to D-rings. I got some from my local Asda supermarket rather than online. They are useful for not needing the D-rings which most others do!

powerkitty · 31/03/2010 07:57

Hi,
You can use the harness with the baby set if you are worried about your little one climbing out.

The rings to secure the harness come with it.

Octaviapink · 31/03/2010 09:09

Good to hear the harness can be safely ignored!
