My DS is almost 4 months and has started teething. A couple of weeks back it was drooling and finger gnawing and a little discomfort, but the last few days he has been in real pain. Each time this has been in the evening and coincided with the bedtime feed. We had got him into a good routine - wash and PJs, feed, nappy change, cuddle and bed - which he was responding to, but now, when we got to the feed part he starts pulling away fromt he breast and crying, frantically gnawing on my knuckle or rubbing his gums side to side across my knuckle at speed, and screaming with pain. We've tried infant powders, calgel (though this doesn't really work when he needs to feed due to the numbing), cold teething rings and last night gave him Calpol which seemed to help. He tires himself out crying and so we've been putting him down without finishing the feed or giving him a final nappy change, just so that we don't start him off again. He then wakes up an hour or so later as he's hungry, and has ben crying out in the night, though not waking up (a different cry to anything beforehand). Is there anything I could try? I don't want to give him Calpol every day, or is that OK? It seems that it is happening at the same sort of time but I don't really want to give him a pre-emptive dose of Calpol, though at least he might feed that way. Is this how it's going to be for the whole time he's teething?!! He's so little it breaks my heart to see him so uncomfortable and upset. Any advice gratefully received.
