14 month old doesnt clap

Hi

My son is now 14 months old. He waved for about a week but now doesnt bother but he has never clapped.

He points at things of interest like cars and aeroplanes and 'chats' away.

Should I be worried about the lack of clapping?

Thanks

I wouldn't be. My Ds is now a week or so away from his second birthday, and clapping only started a few months ago.

It's worrying only because c;apping is one of the 'stages' they highlight in the baby books - there are many different markers they could have chosen; it just so happens that the one they picked is the one thing yout DS isn't so fussed about doing.

My son has only recently started calling me 'Mummy'. So much for mummy and daddy being the first words. He could say 'car' before he could ask for me, and used to just grunt to get mine or DP's attention.

In short: children do things at their own pace.

Honestly though, it's like they don't understand they have to clap their hands so that we can tick it off the list! I used to panic when I read the books and it said 'he should be sitting up now' while my DS lurched merrily backwards every time we sat him up. Then I realised he was just impatient, and was trying to stand up, so kept flinging himself down again. At that point I stopped reading them and just let him get on with it.

Do you mean he doesn't clap or can't clap? If he is unable to bring his hands together to clap then this may be worth bringing up with HV. If he just isn't interested in clapping but shows no signs of difficulty with his hands or movement then I really wouldn't worry.

I taught dgs to clap by singing that nursery rhyme-Clap your hands your daddy's coming down the wagon way, with a pocket full of money and a cart load of hay. While I sang I gently clapped his hands together. Then I sang it clapping my own hands while he watched-after a few goes he did it whenever he heard 'Clap your hands'.[Actually I sing 'Clap your handies daddy's coming' but didnt want you all to shout at me for baby-talk].

Thanks for you messages.

He can bring his hands together infront of him because he will bang blocks together. So thinking about it its like he's not interested.

Thanks for all your replies, its definatley put my mind at rest! Those bloody baby books have got a lot to answer for!!!
