I am very interested as to what other peoples children do at this age.

I would like to know the following;

What words can your child say?
At what age did they say their first word?
How old were they when they started walking?
Do you read to your child?
If so how much and when in the day?
Do your children watch tv?
If so roughly for how long, in a day?

Please tell me to b*** off if you think I'm being to nosey!

Thank you

Lol! Love it!

Will maybe hang on till the 2 yr assessment in October and see what happens in that time and what crops up then.

DS2 was a late talker (and his speech was very disordered until he sorted it out overnight at 2 and a half). If she can point, gesture (and copy gestures), play and appears to understand simple (and I mean simple- as in dd get coat) then you don't need too worry.

Pixiefish · 22/07/2005 21:40

about 10
recently
9 1/2 months
yes
whenever she wants to or i want to
about 20 minutes a week of tv (1 tractor tom episode a week)

17 1/2 months

fqueenzebra · 22/07/2005 21:54

Nbg, I don't know if this helps, but my 3 are early walkers/late talkers. DD (middle in my brood) is coming up to 4yo and her speech still isn't good, but it is S L O W L Y improving. She also has an October birthday so I am trying not to worry about it, she has a whole 'nother year before starting school when she will really need her speech to be clear.

Long list of reasons why I haven't gone down the speech therapy route, but it's something I keep reviewing & monitoring.

Answers for 3 children, youngest only 13m, though:

words at 18 months: 1, 5?, --
words at 23 months: 40?, 45?, --
age of first word: 11m, 16m, (none? by 13m)
walking: 9m, 10m, 11m
did I read to them at 18-23m: yes, yes, --
when read to: frequent intervals during the day
watch tv: 1. no interest; 2. yes, but we didn't have a telly in the house for her to see much on; --

Donbean · 22/07/2005 22:00

ds age 2
we have conversations, says pretty much every thing.
First spoke at around 9 months (said "goal!" when hitting a ball).
Walked at 11 months
We read alot, any time of the day, he has a great interest in books.
TV~ not really interested but its on in the mornings for c beebies.

sansouci · 22/07/2005 22:01

dd was 23 mos last week:

What words can your child say? all gone, down, mama, dada, car, go, & (of course) no
At what age did they say their first word? depends on whether it was "his" word or "our" word
How old were they when they started walking? 22 mos
Do you read to your child? read to dd 5 yrs but ds not interested. likes to look at pictures on his own.
If so how much and when in the day?
Do your children watch tv? not much now that tv is in the attic dd likes her dvds, tho.
If so roughly for how long, in a day? 2 dvds per week

hth!

CelluliteQueen · 22/07/2005 22:12

Hi Nbg, thanks for this thread because it is very reassuring. DS is 2 next month and "failed" his 2 yr check the other day because according to the HV, he should be able to speak 50 words by now and he is still speaking his own gobbledegook, Japanese language. There are a few almost recognisable words there like one (wan), two (tooooo), dog (or is it god?!)and ank-you etc but I wouldn't call it speech.

When HV left the other day I felt like I had totally failed my DS but as my mum pointed out, Einstein didn't speak until the age of 2+ !

I am reassured by the fact that he understands EVERY WORD we say. FTR, he didn't walk until 17 months. My mum's advice is that I should ban Teletubbies as she thinks he is copying them.

I know how you feel as it seems like everybody else's child of this age is able to string a sentence together.....for that matter, my friend's daughter is 4 days older and is able to just that.

Frizbe · 22/07/2005 22:15

What words can your child say? Mummy, Daddy, Chocolate (!) Cat, Dog, Nana,
At what age did they say their first word? about 14mths
How old were they when they started walking? 12Mths
Do you read to your child? Yes
If so how much and when in the day? During the day, when she brings me a book, and evening story.
Do your children watch tv? Yes
If so roughly for how long, in a day?
It depends as if we're in it sometimes rattles on in the background...bad habit! I'd say she actually watches 20mins max, rest of the time it burbles on whilst she plays/reads.

serenity · 22/07/2005 22:15

I introduced myself to DS1's year 3 teacher today, and the first thing she did was tell me how impressed she was with his vocabulary. He didn't say anything other than yes, no, mummy and daddy until he was nearly 2 1/2, our HV was in the process of referring him when he suddenly started chatting away, so try not to worry, some children are just late starters!

Anyway I'll answer the questions for DD who is nearly 21 mths.

What words can your child say? Clearly - up, daddy, mummy (but only when asked to) apple, bye, book. That I understand - biscuit, water, bread, yes, Nick, Matt, Blues Clues (with hand gestures )
At what age did they say their first word? She's been saying Daddy for a few months, but the others have literally been the last week.
How old were they when they started walking? confidently, on her own, 11 mths
Do you read to your child? yes, and so does her dad and DSs
If so how much and when in the day? Whenever she asks,
Do your children watch tv? yes
If so roughly for how long, in a day? Difficult to say. If we are home the TV tends to be on (I can't stand the flat being quiet), but she doesn't sit in front of it for long periods, but dips in and out. We rarely are at home the whole day.

Nbg · 22/07/2005 22:16

Thats very true CQ. It does seem that everyone elses children can do everything.

Have you been offered any help or advice?

OP posts:
CelluliteQueen · 22/07/2005 22:22

Yes, HV said she would refer DS in six months for speech therapy if he wasn't talking by then. I wasn't worried about it til then but now I feel like the pressure's on. TBH I felt really inadequate and still do but my family have reassured me that nothing is amiss. It is reassuring to read about what other MNers have said about late speech on this thread. Thank you

Mirage · 23/07/2005 09:07

dd1 is 23months,she wasn't babbling at her 7 month check, but said her 1st word at about 9 months (I think). She never stops talking now & must have upwards of 400 words or more & can put short sentences together.

She started walking at about 12months.

I have read to her pretty much since birth,as have my mum & sister who look after her when I'm at work. She will 'read' her books on her own,but will come to me about a dozen times a day & ask me to 'read book' to her.

She does watch tv,perhaps 2 hours a day on & off.

suzywong · 23/07/2005 09:31

based on ds2 22 months

What words can your child say? - too many to list, and in two languages all in all about 50-60
At what age did they say their first word- 9 months
How old were they when they started walkingmn - bang on his first birthday
Do you read to your child - yes
If so how much and when in the day - four or five books during the day and two or three at bedtime if he's not too tired
Do your children watch tv - yes, far more than I am proud of
If so roughly for how long, in a day - 3 -4 hours BUT they do get up at 6 am and I need an hour or two to come round myself so that's when they watch the most

anchovies · 23/07/2005 09:45

Nbg, ds is is 18 months and can say less than 5 recognisable words. Lots of animal noises and baby signs, some made up but that we understand.

He walked at almost 15 months. We read lots prob a couple of hours a day, its one of the few things that he concentrates on for more than 30 seconds. He watches an average of 2 cbeebies programs a day but more if he's poorly.

If I'm honest we are a bit worried (especially reading everyone elses answers!) His comprehension is absolutely amazing though and he usually manages to let us know what he wants.

Nbg · 23/07/2005 10:03

Wow SW. 2 languages, thats pretty impressive!

Thanks everyone for contributing. It's really helping me to see a bigger picture IYKWIM.

melsy · 23/07/2005 10:09

10 mths I think, it was yum yum, bit mad on food this one, hello & bye !!!

14mths

yes

Yes at bedtime and as others when a book is given to me.

Do your children watch tv?

Not really , the odd cbbc programme or video on MTV !!!

If so roughly for how long, in a day?

a few minutes and then shes not interested

Kittypickle · 23/07/2005 10:16

Nbq, I've thought about this a bit and DS (22m) has made huge leaps in his speech in the last month or so. It seemed like he had just a few words for ages, then has suddenly exploded and in the space of a few weeks has started putting two or three words together. It was a big issue with his big sister that he couldn't say her name for ages but I think she wishes that he couldn't when he keeps yelling for her ! Before then he didn't use to bother saying much , we all understood what he wanted without him having to say. The difference a month or so has made is amazing. I know how worrying it is though, my DD has had speech problems, but you wouldn't really know now, she's 6.

kate100 · 23/07/2005 10:20

DS is 2 on wednesday.

What words can your child say? He can say lots of words now, too mant to count and can repeat things that I say to him, but it took him ages to get the hang of before he really started to progress and he only started understanding and saying 'yes' a few weeks ago

At what age did they say their first word? clearly at about 18/19 months, babbled from about 7 months

How old were they when they started walking? about 14 months

Do you read to your child? yes

If so how much and when in the day? whenever he givesme a book and at bedtime, he's also happy to look at them himself
Do your children watch tv? yes
If so roughly for how long, in a day? usually an hour or so in the morning when I get ready, but more at the moment, I'm 39 weeks pregnant today

I was starting to get concerned about DS's speech as all the other kids were speaking before him, but I knew that he understood me, which was reassuring. I also knew that as with everthing else he does, he would think 'Oh, that might be a useful skill, I think I'll do that now', my own personality out to get me in the angelic face of DS!! He also started to babble in a conversational way before he started talking, which it sounds as if your dd is doing. But she is your dd and if you feel something needs looking at you are probably right, you know her better than anyone else.

He still makes mistakes in his speech which are very entertaining, fingins=fingers, bunter=button.

CQ, I think that the way your health visitor spoke to you was disgraceful, how dare she put a label on your child at such a young age, it's a tick in a box for ffs. I wuld definitely complain at the use of the term 'fail'. Children progress at different rates and do things when they are ready.

PeachyClair · 23/07/2005 12:48

Kate100, my ds3 is also 2 on wednesday [grin}

Happy birthday to your little man!

CelluliteQueen · 23/07/2005 13:30

Thanks kate100, TBH she wasn't quite as blunt as that but that was the gist of it. Happy birthday to your DS for Weds and good luck with the birth! I know lots do it but I can't imagine looking after a newborn in addition to demanding toddler!

PeachyClair · 23/07/2005 13:40

I too feel like everyone elses child speaks better than DS3 (the one who is 2 next Wednesday). We have a friend with a son four days older whose kid can string sentences together, my 3 month younger nephew can too. Not Harold though, about ten words? Not convinced he understands me either, sometimes but not always. Gestures work better. I know I should take him to the GP as MIl has partial hearing loss, DS1 has mild hearing issues, DS2 pretty bad. DS1 also has AS though, and I don't think I can take another smack in the mouth from the health police yet!
but go I must, will make an appointment Monday I guess.

SofiaAmes · 24/07/2005 00:01

nbg, it doesn't sound like much is wrong other than normal variance from child to child. But even if there was a problem, I'm not sure there is too much you could do about it at this age, or even if you could do something...it wouldn't be irreversible harm if you ended up doing it in 6 months time.

My ds is 4.5 and very clever (not just me who says so...). He is very good at maths, but can't write a single letter that is recognizable by anyone else. He can explain the concepts of gravity and inertia and how important fiber is to your diet to you, but can't put his clothing on right way round. He was walking at 12 mo.
My dd is 2.5 and has been speaking in full sentences since she was 12 months old ("mummy, I want my milk now" was one of her early utterances), but didn't start walking until 18 months. She can draw letters better than ds.
They both watch a very limited amount of tv (1/2 hour a day in the morning and occasionally on a rainy day) and are read to every evening for 20-30 min.

colinsmommy · 24/07/2005 00:24

Words-too many to list. Lots of food, action and words about his toys. He's about average for his age, I'd guess.

He said hi at about 9 1/2 months.

Walked 2 days after his 1st birthday.

I've read to him since before he was born.

Afraid I let him watch tv. About an hour or so a day. He loves the Wiggles. Been really bad the past few days, since I'm 35 weeks pg and really tired.

He's 23 months old.

PiccadillyCircus · 24/07/2005 06:43

DS is 20 months old.

What words can your child say?

There are too many to list - and once he starts he doesn't stop .

At what age did they say their first word?

He started saying words that meant something when he was about 17 months I think ( that I can't remember exactly but I am 32 weeks pregnant and wole up too early)

How old were they when they started walking? Nearly 15 months

Do you read to your child?
I read a lot to him as does DH

If so how much and when in the day?

Reading happens whenever I am presented with a book and a request to sit on my knee (depending on what else is going on of course). He also has books at bedtime.

Do your children watch tv?
He's not really watching it at the moment - went through a phase of Ballamory, Thomas the Tank Engine etc but I'm not sure they were having a good effect on him so we've not really had it on much recently. It has helped that the weather has been nice so lots of playing in the garden.

If so roughly for how long, in a day?

At the moment, none.

I will read everyone else's comments now .

merglemergle · 24/07/2005 17:09

hi nbg. my son is 22 months and has a lot of words. Many are only intelligable because he signs simultaneously though. Didn't really start talking til 18months or so, now has too many words to list.

what really helped was signing. we started tiny talk at around 20m. it helped partly because he could commuincate at last.

Also-he got into tv at this age-mainly teletubbies-this has definately helped language. he watches the same dvd maybe 5 times and then starts saying the words they use. I don't restrict his tv for this reason, and because he really can take or leave it. and he doesn't sleep much (maybe 8 hrs total in 24 hrs) so it gives us a break (bad, but also tired, mummy). we are not tv watchers and not wild about situation but honestly think it has helped him develop speech. up til VERY recently he has neede words reinforced lots and lots of times. now he hears a word once and he has got it.

started walking at 11m btw. now we read god knows how much, a good hour a day easily and thats with a new baby in the house, more before. before he started speaking he showed no interest in books.
