11 months old - Too much napping in the day???

Hi All
My DD 11 months old sleeps 12hrs at night then naps for up to 2hrs in the morning and between 1hr - 2hrs in the afternoon.
People keep on telling me that she sleeps too much and shouldn't be allowed to sleep that much!!
I think that she obviously needs the sleep so i'm happy for her to have it. More importantly she's a very contented little girl.
But if on the odd occasion i wake her early from a nap then she gets quite ratty.
Should i just leave her be?
Any advice would be very welcome.

Absolutely just leave her! She needs/wants the sleep and it's obviously not interefering with night time sleeping, so let her have it!

Just leave her, having seen the babies across my ante natal group, the one thing that is clear is that every baby is different. Sounds like you and her have a good routine going, she'll let you know when she's ready to change

ExplodingBananas · 27/03/2010 18:47

Yes for goodness sake don't listen to anyone they are just jealous (me too).
It is more than average but won't do her any harm. Do you keep her very busy in the day thus wearing her out, spill the beans I want to know your secret!

timelordvictorious · 27/03/2010 18:52

If it works, don't change it!

My DD had a similar routine when she was that age, and even now (she is 2.1) she sleeps at least 12
hrs at night and for 2 hrs after her lunch.

I'm grateful I've got a little girl so committed to her bed!

Igglybuff · 27/03/2010 18:56

sounds good to me! Some babies need more, some need less. Just go with whatever makes her happy.

(as an aside, timelord everytime I see your name, I think of the drums. That's a bit sad isn't it?!)

My 16 mo DS is also a really enthusiastic kipper! He generally sleeps 11-12 hours at night and usually does a 2-3 hour nap in the morning and a 1-2 hour nap in the afternoon. He's had this routine since he was 7mo although sometimes now he'll drop his afternoon nap.

It's brilliant and I am the envy of many of my friends although it can be a pain when you want to get out and do stuff. I have had to really go on at my parents (who look after him a couple of days a week) to just leave him be when he wants his marathon naps.

I reckon that if it works for our DCs, don't try to change it!

My 11 month old doesn't sleep enough. Want to swap?

longbay · 28/03/2010 09:54

Thank you all so much for your responses. I'm glad you all agree that i should leave her. That's what i've always felt is the best thing to do.
ExplodingBananas - she just loves her sleep! And has had this routine since 7 wks old. Although the daytime naps took a while to establish.

Do you want to swap, my 11 mo doesn't sleep for more than 10 hours a night and then maybe 2 half hour naps during the day!

Schulte · 28/03/2010 10:07

llareggub, I suppose someone has to have babies who don't need much sleep, it's just a bit unfair that it's you and me eh?

BertieBotts · 28/03/2010 10:09

DS dropped the second nap at around 15 months. It was affecting his night time sleep (I couldn't work out what it was for ages!) - if she is sleeping well and it works for you, then don't change a thing

pranma · 28/03/2010 10:52

dgs2 sleeps about one and a half hours morning and 2 hours afternoon. He is 13 months old and sleeps 12 hours at night.he is a lively happy baby-walked at 11 months and says several words clearly.
you are very lucky-she will drop a nap soon enough and you will really miss it

girliefriend · 29/03/2010 22:11

That sounds about right to me! My dd loved her sleep and as long as still sleeping 12 hours a night encourage long naps in the day!

I have just shown all your responses to my Mum, who is one of the people who thinks my baby girl sleeps too much - Need i say more?! Isn't this website great!!
