Help please! My DS is 2.5 and i am currently 40+1 with DC2. My sister is getting married in 4 weeks time and we are all really looking forward to it. Apart from my DS. He is refusing to go, which isn't an issue, because he will be! However, he is a total noghtmare when it comes to wearing new things. I bought him new shoes (he will only wear his tatty trainers) a few weeks ago to get him used to them. Every family member has tried EVERY trick in the book but he still refuses to wear them. He is very articulate for his age and can voice his opinion which doesn't help!! He is also fussy with clothes. I am not too wooried about this as i can usually sort the clothes thing and have told my sister a suit jacket may be pushing it!

It is really the shoe issue i am worried about. I will have a new born and am worried about DS kicking off and spoiling the day!

Bribary, will power, discussion, role play, forcing have all failled so far!!!!

HELP

To be hnest if its causing you all that much stress I would let him wear what ever he likes just so I can enjoy the day.

But i will do anything for a quiet life

First off best of luck for the impending newborn - I'm sure you'll have a beautiful addition to the family. Could this help playing the big bro card???? I only have one child so never tried it but according to pals it's failsafe!!!!! Big boy shoes, big brother suit, and get everyone to praise him on being such a fab big brother. Could it be hes worried that all eyes will be on DC at wedding and he'll be left out???? I'm sure you've done all u can to reassure him but even at 2 kids have learnt that whatever they do mum will always love them!!!!!

notapizzaeater · 27/03/2010 08:38

My wedding photos show my then 4 yr old brother in a full outfit, waistcoast trousers and scabby trainers - lol

tbh it wasn't a real issue and I wasn't in the slightest bit worried - sure your sister will understand ....

Tee2072 · 27/03/2010 09:14

Let him wear the trainers.

There's a picture of my DH at his uncles wedding aged 2. SIL (aged 6 at the time) looks lovely as a bridesmaid. And there's DH, dressed as Superman, with wellies on.

My DD (aged 2.5) has gone to nursery in slippers more than once... Just let him wear what he wants and get out the cringworthy snap when he brings his girlfriend home

Don't mention again - nor any members of your family. Casually in the morning put his trainers and new shoes out and see which one he goes for.

Or buy nicer trainers throw the old ones out - get him to go and choose them.

geordieminx · 27/03/2010 18:36

Dont mention shoes again.

Buy new shoes for baby.

Morning of wedding, baby has new shoes.. "would you like to wear new shoes too ds?"

If not, he wears scabby trainers. No big deal.

Or take him to shop and let him pick new trainers, on premise that scabby trainers go off to "trainer fairy"

Let him wear what he likes. Honestly, surely nobody will care and anyone who has kids has been there in the mad unreasonable demand stage at one time or another.

But if really keen on the new shoes, how about getting stickers of something he really likes (no idea what this currently is for two year olds - Waybuloo, trains, Night Garden? Anyway, whatever he thinks is the coolest of cool!) and put them inside the new shoes on the soles. Tell him that YoJoJo or Iggle Piggle or Thomas the Tank or whoever will be in the shoes with him and help him be the best boy ever on the day etc.

Octaviapink · 28/03/2010 08:19

I agree - fight the fights that need fighting and leave the rest - let him wear the trainers!

pranma · 28/03/2010 10:59

The important thing is that you all enjoy the day.would he like new trainers-maybe with lights in the heels which flash when he dances jumps up and down?

NoahAndTheWhale · 28/03/2010 11:00

I really wouldn't worry about the trainers. He is 2. It doesn't matter.
