How old before we worry about saying Rs?

DS has tongue tie. We managed to BF despite it and although the frenulum is still there it isn't tight at all.

He's a real chatterbox, but struggles with R sounds. They tend to come out as L instead.

He's only 2y 8m though, so this might be within normal limits for a child of his age - I don't know. He's a good speaker so it's quite noticeable when he gets sounds wrong.

I'm pretty chilled about the whole thing to be honest, but wouldn't like to think that I'm not addressing something that he would benefit from help with. He starts nursery in the summer and I imagine the teachers there would pick up on anything, but I've no idea if this is something that would be better sorted out sooner than later.

Any thoughts welcomed

It is within normal limits - an R may be still distorted at age 5 according to info I got from SALT. My 5 year old ds still struggles a little with his (more like a W sound).

Interestingly, my 2.9 year old dd can say an R but not an L sound. An L sound requires tongue elevation so is good that your ds can make this sound!

It can continue to develop throughout the school years. Many children are still developing it at 8. At 2;8 it is 100% normal to be unable to say 'r'. I am a SALT.

A loose tongue tie really never causes speech problems!

Thanks both. At least I'm not neglecting him terribly
