When do they start pointing?

Just that really?

DD is 10 months and we have waving, clapping, twinkle twinkle hands (so cute) and a random hands behind the head gesture but no pointing.

Just wondered when it might come - it must make communication a lot easier for them.

Your dd is doing very well for 10 months. Pointing does come a bit later, ds is 17 months and has been pointing for at least a couple of months.

Thanks
Yes -she has been fairly early to do the other things I think (I know it means nothing in the grand scheme of things ) so good to know that pointing tends to come after them.

Does it remove some frustration when they can point to what they want? I am holding out for this!

My dd was 15 months or so - a bit later than average maybe as she has fine motor difficulties. I have seen friends children under the age of 1 pointing though. It might relieve frustration - have you tried baby signing? This was good with my ds!

My 9 mth old is waving and pointing (at things she's deliberately thrown on the floor) plus giving and taking but I have to say (proudly) she's pretty exceptional in her age group (rolled at 8 weeks, sat unsupported at 4 mthsand pulling herself to standing now)... before you hate me, my DS was v late at everything so I've had both types!.... I think it's usual to do this around 12-14 mths.

So lovely when they do these things but try not to tell antental buds, stressful to the mums of sluggish boys- I remember well!

God just reread my post and thought how insuffereably conceited I sounded. Sorry, just soooo proud of DD and keeping it all in during my known life of daily mums as I would annoy everyone if I told them she stands up, trying to walk, eats 3yr old's tea of pasta and tuna, says DAda, hiya and mmmmm (milk) as well as building Lego towers and turning her mobile on and off ! God, I'm at it again.... Apologies, compulsive bragging!!!

DD is now 14 mo and (I think - it's amazing how you forget ) she started pointing at about 11 months. Not sure how much it really helps with communication (although it is a key skill in developing communication apparently) -a lot of the time I am left guessing what she is pointing and shouting at. I worry that I tell her the wrong names for things and that she actually thinks that trees are sky and flowers are birds (actually, she knows very well what birds are, and can point at them and name them - preen).

I've often been curious about why it's so important (red flag for ASD, but much later; only humans do it) - so if anyone has any good links I'd love to see them. She can point and has quite a few words, but can't walk . Swings and the proverbial...

Driving- they all do things at diff times and watching my DS (now3) and his buddies grow really highlighted this to me. My DS was the last to walk, and was still stumbly and dangerous on his feet at almost 2!!! But has been linguistically ahead of his peers bit very recently it has all levelled out and all are completely the same! It reminds me to enjoy DD and her 'advancements' as she'll probably be in nappies at 4 or some other thing I'll be wound up about at the time!
I used to worry about the influence of babytalk on Night Garden and wonder how DS would ever learn what a Hoover was when his part time working mum paid the cleaner to use it but played instead on days off! Bizarrely they get a grip on everything we show them, and all the rest so just enjoy the funny interpretations "lifterlater", "mummies have two bottoms" etc etc

drivingmisscrazy · 18/03/2010 22:06

FBA - not worried about her lack of walking, but am impressed by her capacity to understand and name things in terms of their function - so a glass with wine in it is a 'cup' on the grounds that mummy is drinking liquid from it . Yes, looking forward to those hilarities

DD is 10mo and pointing has just started, but she doesn't clap hands or wave bye bye - I think all these things come in at different times.

pranma · 20/03/2010 14:01

dgs2 is 13 months and started pointing just before his b'day but I'm never sure what he's meaning by it!he does wave[and say] 'bye-bye',he claps and started walking at 11 months. They are all so different yet by 5ish most will be at the same stage.
