Reflux - how likely is it to happen again?

Hi All

Apologies if I am posting this in the wrong section. My DD (first child) had silent reflux and suffered horribly with this until she was about 9 months old. I am now pregnant with my 2nd and am wondering how likely it is that the new baby will have reflux too. Does anyone have any experience of this? Anyone had more children and them not have reflux?

Thanks

All 4 of mine have had silent reflux,Sorry I hope it doesn't happen again.

JimmyMcNulty · 16/03/2010 22:22

Yes ds1 had silent reflux, treated with ranitidine.

Ds2 doesn't have it - very different experience!

CarGirl · 16/03/2010 22:25

I have 4 dc (all girls) only 1 had silent reflux. It was a truly miserable and hideous experience, I really hope it doesn't happen again.

Being positive you will know the signs and be listened to earlier this time? They kept insisting that dd had "a touch of colic" and she was my 3rd and I knew the constant screaming and lack of sleep wasn't normal!

WilliamItWasReallyNothing · 17/03/2010 07:54

thanks so much for your replies Hoping v much it doesn't happen again. DD had silent reflux also and it was a miserable heart wrenching experience so I feel for you all.

BF didn't go well with DD - the reflux wasn't recognised fully at the time, she had a poss tongue tie, etc and I gave up after 2 weeks. I bitterly regret this and wonder if BF would have been better for the reflux symptoms. Did any of you BF dc with reflux? Did it make any difference?

DS1 no reflux - lovely chilled baby
DS2 silent reflux- OMG no sleep for at least 9 months crying nearly for whole of first yr..

Hence DH had snip after DS2 he was that bad....

Hopefully there is no link and its a bit of a luck of the draw thing got my fingers and toes crossed for you , you have a little chilled bubs

foxinsocks · 17/03/2010 08:04

Both of mine had it

Dd was breast fed but really struggled and I was relieved when I went back to work and she had to be bottlefed (it was at this point that we discovered she had a milk/soya allergy so she went on special formula and that did help improve her reflux)

Ds was breastfed for slightly longer but also had reflux (and a milk allergy which he outgrew)

foxinsocks · 17/03/2010 08:06

yes I hope your second child doesn't have it either

but if he/she does, one thing I will say is that you will know what to do and I found the doctors listened to me a lot more second time round

Tillyscoutsmum · 17/03/2010 08:09

DD - no reflux
DS (second child) has silent reflux. I am b'fing him but am not sure I'll make it until 6 months (he's 13 weeks at the moment).

Fingers crossed for you

Owlingate · 17/03/2010 09:02

Both mine have reflux, second dc is more severe to be honest. But you know what's going on, you know to ask for the medicine really quickly, you know to do all the cot tilting, holding upright stuff...I won't deny it it is rubbish, I really thought the next one wouldn't have it. Thinking back it would've been better to prepare as if the next one would have it then I wouldn't have been so disappointed! Have mix fed both btw, neither BF nor bottle made any difference.

MrsJohnDeere · 17/03/2010 09:12

ds1 had it, ds1 didn't

notsoladyjess · 17/03/2010 12:00

my ds2 had reflux for the first 2 months and he screamed and puked almost constantly. i took him to the homeopath who gave him 2 pills (lycopodium) and he was better the next day and never got it again. I was amazed. SO worth trying it out.

REFLUX IS PANTS!!!!!!!

DD no reflux or feeding issues at all, a total dream of a baby - text book.

DS, well where to start. 10 months old on Omeprazole, Domperidone, Gaviscon, tried Renitadine etc....... all for reflux. He had a tongue tie - now corrected, is allergic to cow's milk and has lots of other issues too which I won't bore you with! I've read up on reflux, both silent and not and there is NO genetic link between siblings IYSWIM.

So, try not to worry and as others have said, you'll know what to look for and hopefully, if you have a good HV, you can get on it!!

BTW - DS was breastfed (EBM) and was much better on it than formula (Pepti Junior) but I was too poorly to keep expressing. I'd def give BF a go with the new bundle of joy.

Hope all goes well xx

Mouseface · 17/03/2010 14:44

BTW - the internet will tell you there IS a link within familes re silent reflux "studies have shown a genetic link........" but my DS's paed and dietician say there is no hard evidence linking one baby to the next with the same genetic parents.

MrsGravy · 17/03/2010 14:45

I've been wondering this too! My first child had no reflux or feeding issues. My 2nd had reflux, he vomited continuously for the first 9/10 months and had big sleep issues too. He was breastfed for the first year of his life. Gaviscon, renitadine and domperidone made no difference whatsoever. Neither did weaning. He finally stopped throwing up when he was able to pull himself upright.

I'm pregnant with no.3 and hoping like hell for a non-refluxy baby!! I have bought a ton of bibs and muslims just in case and am trying to mentally prepare myself for the worst...

MrsGravy · 17/03/2010 14:46

Muslins not muslims

Mouseface · 17/03/2010 15:34

MrsGravy LOL!!!! How sad tho, I have a shed load of muslin squares and the washer is on all day everyday!

Good luck with DC3

jasperc163 · 17/03/2010 16:20

DD1 terrible reflux and resulting feeding issues - under paediatrician and dietician etc.
DD2 no reflux at all, despite the fact that we were told we probably would have the same thing again.

So there is hope!

HappySeven · 17/03/2010 18:01

Lovely to hear there is hope. My first vomited until he was one (I found the terry nappies more absorbent than muslins) and have taken four years to build up to going through it all again.

On the bright side I do feel well-prepared for it this time and if this one doesn't have reflux how lucky am I going to feel!

WilliamItWasReallyNothing · 17/03/2010 19:44

Thank you for all sharing your stories - it seems that there is hope after all!

Mouseface thanks for the info on BF DS - I have always suspected that my DD would have been less poorly if BF.

MrsGravy we also found reflux was only sorted when DD could stand up

Fingers crossed for a non-refluxy baby this time round for all of us

MissusRabbit · 19/03/2010 11:49

I'm worried too.....DC4 due next week....DD was a dream feeder, DS a nightmare with reflux and sleep issues..

I keep getting asked if i want a boy or girl, or one that sleeps.....one that feeds well and isn't in pain will be just fine!

Fingers crossed for us both x

mrsjuan · 19/03/2010 12:00

Reassuring to read that it doesn't always happen with subsequent babies. THe first 3 months with my DD were so miserable for all concerned that I am very worried about having another baby (nothing on the cards yet but have always wanted 2 children).

Agree that it will be easier to spot the signs next time round - I will have a bottle of ranitadine ready in preparation if possible!

DD's reflux was mostly silent and settled down when she could hold herself more upright. We struggled with breastfeeding and poor weight gain for 6 months but she has been fine with formula and dairy so fingers crossed there's no milk allergies.

MumMeh · 19/03/2010 12:03

DS had dreadful reflux.

DD (two years later) had none at all.

Fingers crossed!

Loobyfly · 21/03/2010 20:35

All 3 of mine had it

sunsandwaves · 15/01/2021 22:20
