Hi babyjane. I'm in no way an expert but I didn't walk until I was 2 and a half. Never crawled or shuffled, just got up one day and walked. When DH & I had DS1 he didn't walk until he was 16 and a half months & he never shuffled or crawled either. Obviously late starters run in our family too Personally I'd wait before taking your DD to be checked out. Unless of course you think she's in some sort of pain or distress or you can see any physical signs of abnormality in hips, legs, etc. However, like I said, I'm no expert and I'm sure there'll be people along in a minute to give you better advice

here is a thread I started last night - it might help you

DD didn't walk until about 22 months (she crawled just after she was 1). Around here it is also standard for them to been seen by the HV at 18 months if they're not walking but they don't necessarily see it as a problem, they just want to keep an eye on them.
DD was actually referred to a physio as one of legs and ankles was a bit weak but she started to walk anyway after one appointment.
I wouldn't worry about your DD not walking but I also wouldn't worry about her being seen by the doctor either.

19 months to the day here, with no crawling, kneeling etc etc just rolling around like a rolled up carpet.
One day he just got up like lazarus and did it.
In the event she does get checked out, don't panic as a physio will tell in a blink if there is anything that needs attention. Which is unlikely as you would have noticed by now. Honest

ds1 16mths, ds2 19mths, dd 20 mths and ds3(obviously a future athelete 14 mths!!

ds1 also a late talker, in comparison to friends...I think they hope for two words at two! All of a sudden at 2.5 he talked well.

tvfriend · 16/03/2010 16:06

Yes- don't panic about physios etc. Should have said that even though DD was referred the physio wasn't worried about her, just wanted me to get her to try and put more weight on the weak leg. She was absolutely fine, had just got a bit lazy.

thanks to you all for your input
ceebee i read your thread&was big help.has eased my worries a bit!would feel even better if she was actually cruising or weight bearing tho tbh.

My DS didn't crawl till he was 15 months and took his first steps at 20 mths, I think everyone tends to get a bit over excited about this in the medical profession ( he had tests for muscular dystrophy and saw the physio At 20mths) then walked a week later. I'm a strong believer in that children do everything in their own time and get there eventually so please please please don't worry

mintyfresh · 16/03/2010 21:44

In some areas, HV's and paediatricians won't act until age 2 although if there are obvious problems physios can be helpful. Sounds like she's doing great and just taking her own time.

My dd walked late at 20 months but has slight mobility problems (low muscle tone and hypermobility) and is still a little unsteady on her feet even now!

compo · 16/03/2010 21:46

my ds didnt walk til 22 mnths
dont worry

babyjane67 · 19/03/2010 15:28
