What fun, we have grunting, growling and squealing

ds is 2.1 and doesn't say a lot at the moment which I'm sure leads to some of the above with his frustrations. Tell me for the sake of my sanity that your ds/dd went through similar and that it's just a phase, that there is light at the end of the tunnel! He seems content to get by with these methods rather than talking, which he can do.He understands all we say to him pretty much and can follow fairly detailed instructions, but goes round the house talking like a bloomin' ape man! Also, what methods did you use when they were grunting and growling. Am I just being a bit weak and should be constantly ignoring the grunting?

Have you kidnapped my son!!!

he sounds the same (my son, that is).
I know exactly what he wanta when he stands there going HAAAA HAAAA HAAAA.

But it does come down to discipline. When my nanny looks after my DS, He speaks!!!

You can try to encourage him to talk by doing the following:

  1. If offering a snack, offer two different types and ask him if he wants the apple or the banana. Try to encourage him to say which one he wants rather than pointing or grunting. If he points or grunts explain to him that you don't understand and he needs to tell you which one, apple or banana?
  1. Play a game such as tickling and when you tickle ds repeat the word tickle tickle tickle. He will want you to play some more so try to encourage him to ask by saying the word tickle. If he attempts it or says it then reward him by playing some more.

These are just examples but try to use these techniques wherever you can, eg, do you want to go on the swing or the slide?

Thanks for the replies. I do try and offer choices like with the fruit but he will still just stand there grunting til the cows come home. Needless to say I have a very stubborn little man on my hands. Will just have to keep trying I suppose.

I know my DS has different grunting noises for different things

And he has this high pitched noise when he wants me to follow him (maybe a toy has gone under a chair and he can't get it) and sort something out.
