Undoing seatbelts in car

DS (nearly 3) has just got a new carseat and today to my horror, he undid the seatbelt that threads through the seat (luckily when we had stopped), any tips on how this can be nipped in the bud? TIA

Is he not in a 5point seat any more?

We had to put DS back into his stage 2 because of this. They are just not old enough to see the reason behind keeping seat belt on at that age.

sazzerbear · 14/03/2010 13:53

No, he's not in 5 point one anymore as due to his height and weight we were advised to change seats.

sazzerbear this was one issue I refused to compromise or be nice about.
The first time my dd or ds did this I stopped the car immediately, turned round in my seat and really lost it... I mean, really let rip.
This is probably the only time I have ever done this, I mean really lost my temper, no more mister nice guy. TBH I think it frightened the shit out of them. Can't remember exactly what I said, but it was clear it was totally unacceptable.
If that doesn't work, put him back in baby seat and say can't sit in big boy chair until he can behave like a big boy.
I wouldn't offer rewards etc, because I think this in non-negotiable. Not like tidying a bedroom or something that could be left till later or tomorrow!
Good luck!

The first time any of my dc's did this I just stopped the car and refused to move until seatbelt was back on. (Useful if you're on your way somewhere they want to go!)

If this doesn't work put him back in babyseat.

nocluemum · 14/03/2010 14:17

Yup. Happende to me too. I just let rip too and told him off so much and now he says that only mummy can undo it and totally understands that he is not too and that its dangerous. He also could undo the 5 point too just before we switched and all the cupboard locks and electric plug safety things....

Thanks guys, great advice!

I would refuse to go if he keeps undoing it put him back into the other seat. He is safer in a seat that he is at the top of than not strapped in a seat. I don't drive if any of my children or my friends children are not strapped. If they undo thier selfs or take arms out I stop the car. My car my rules.

How tall and heavy is he at 2 to be out of a five point harness? [curious]

teamcullen · 14/03/2010 15:37

my DS2 did this all the time when he was little, and to make it worse would try and climb into the front of the car. We used to tell him off, stop the car etc.. but he would always try it on again on the next journey.

He was caught doing it by a police man.

It was the best £60 fine ever as the policeman told him off and he never did it again.

sazzerbear · 14/03/2010 16:05

He's 3 in a couple of months and 3.5 feet tall!

There is a thingy you can buy that stops them from reaching the release button. I'll have a google for you.

bran · 14/03/2010 16:13

Here you go.

sazzerbear · 14/03/2010 16:40

brilliant, thanks bran!

My neighbours GD used to undo her 5 point harness and somehow get out and stand between the front seats. She did it once when she was in her Aunty's car and she really got shouted at by said Aunty and never did it again.
