DS5 started wetting himself during the day

Hello All,

Just wondering if anyone could offer any new tactics to try...

My DS, who is 5 and 3 months, has just started wetting himself during the day. He?s probably been dry during the day since he was about 3 ½ (at nursery) and was fine when he started primary school ? it?s just been since about January 2010 that he?s started wetting himself and we don?t know what else to try.

We?re confident it?s not a physical thing: sometimes he can stay dry (and used to all the time), and rushes to the toilet and has a wee, he doesn?t have an infection, he wees normally at home (most of the time); he?s not scared of the toilets at home or school (when the teacher has been talking to me he?s gone in and used them comfortably).

But almost every day recently at school he will completely empty his bladder, where he?s sitting, and then just not care about it. He also used to lie to the teachers if they asked him if he?d had an accident ? saying ?No? whilst sitting in a puddle... I believe it?s just because he?s lazy ? he gets too absorbed in what he?s doing (colouring, the PC, lunch, anything) and can?t be bothered to go to the toilet ? and he doesn?t mind sitting in wet, smelly clothes.

We?ve tried being angry (and giving him time-out), indifference (just shrugging it off); making him wash his pants out, sitting in just his pants, not being angry but letting him know Mummy is upset about this (but then I?m worried in letting him know he can upset me...); concern about his class mates stepping in his wee or that they might mock him... He?s got ?cool? pants ? but now doesn?t care about getting Roary the Racing Car wet. Today he wet himself at a friend?s and he came home in the most girliest knickers (I deliberately chose them) ? he didn?t want to put them on at first but then didn?t really care...

He?s still in nappies at night (we tried it last summer, but he clearly wasn?t interested ? we?re going to have another go this summer). He?s fine at doing anything else in the toilet (although does prefer to go at home)

I have asked for ?professional help? (with the health visitor/school nurse) but she can?t see us for ages and she told me we?re already doing all the right things anyway...

I was just wondering if anyone had any other ideas. Or if someone could reassure me this is normal (I know he?ll grow out of it, but it?s really getting me down). Apologies for the long rambling post but I need help!

Thanks.

If DS wets himself while watching TV, the TV goes off. If he's on the PC when he does it, it's turned off.

Try stopping him from doing what he'd clearly rather be doing than going to the toilet, IYSWIM. It's certainly made improvements in the TuppennyTail household.

Is he bothered about something at school?

Sorry - at work now, lunch break!

He's not fussed/upset about anything at school (and has used the loos in front of me there).

We've tried depriving him of favourite things (the PC, certain toys) but he doesn't seem to mind after a while.

Nothing has changed - nothing in the school or at home. He's just being lazy about going, and then not being fussed sitting in wet clothes... or wearing bright pink knickers to go home in!

Any help appreciated...
