Dd's name starts with S and she always writes it back to front. Is there a way to help her remember which way it goes?

Or is it just one of those things that comes with time?

yes, it will come with time.

but in the meantime...

can she right a letter 'c'? I told my DS2 that to write a 's', he starts by writing a 'c' and then flipping over and curving around the other way, iyswim!

Lol - I just asked her to write a C (she's sitting at the table drawing next to me) and she did a lovely C... starting at the bottom and going up. An S off that sort of C would still be backwards!

how old is your DD? at my dc's school, they do emphasise that if you want to teach your children to write before they start school, to please teach them correct letter formation. (i.e. writing a c by starting at the top) They hand out a sheet showing how letters are to be drawn. Didn't apply to me as neither of my DCs were interested in learing to write before formal school. However, I have been told it is hard to 'relearn' the right way.

If she is really keen, perhaps do dot-to-dots of letters so that she can trace over them to get into the habit of drawing them in the right way.

I used to do the same thing and I remember my teacher told me "Sammy Snake starts the race" and I would remember to do an S the right way as if it was about to run from the left to the right side of the page.

The snake thing, yes I'll try telling her that.

I remember doing letter sheets where you start on the dot and follow the arrows. Will try and find some online.

Poutine we're outside the UK and they start school at 3 here , so she is practising what she has learned at school. I am going to ask the teacher if they are taught how to do the letters the right way because I have noticed that she does e a funny way too.

She's such a stubborn little wretch that she insists she knows best and that her S is the right way around.

Also, I'll add that at her age I don't care much which way around her S goes, but she gets frustrated so I just wondered if there was an easy trick to tell her to help her remember. She loves letters and writing and gets out her pens and paper to practice. I promise I'm not hothousing.

sorry, didn't mean to imply you were hothousing! it's nice that she's so keen!

had another idea, you could perhaps remind her that 's' starts at the top by drawing backwards (ie right to left) across the page. that worked with helping DS1 but he was a bit older (4) than your dd.

How about practising drawing/writing 's' in sand or flour (using pointy finger) and, as well as tracing dotted lines, try writing some using thick highlighter pens and using a green dot at the top (go!) and a red dot at the bottom (stop!). Your DD can then trace over. Worth a go. It'll come in time I'm sure.
