Ds is 20 months old and i believe he is very sensible little man. He is a great sleeper and is in a solid routine and easy to handle most of the time.

On saturday i converted his cotbed into toddler bed and sat night went without hiccup. He went straight to sleep, didn't waken at all and didn't budge underneath the junior quilt. I was so pleased.

But last night was a different story. It took me a good while to get him to go to sleep and i actually had to stay with him in the room until he settled because he kept getting up and playing about his room. Then at 1.30am he decided to get up and play with his musical frog and read a book lol!!!! Mind you, whenever i told him to get back into bed he did listen to me.

I'm just wondering if i had taken this step to prematurely or should i persevere and this is just him adjusting?

DD1 went into a bed at 18m because I caught her hanging out her cot

I don't think it's too early

We got her a bed guard to stop her rolling out (and to discourage her from climbing out once in) She was fine

He'll get used to it

first thing is safety.. if you are sure that he can't fall out of bed, have you also got barriers in place that mean he can't get out of the bedroom and hurt himself.

For me it would be too early, and I'd put the cot bed back up but there never is a time when it is clearly right to make this or any change, so you just have to go with what you think he can safely do

There is a bedrail on the side of the bed so he won't fall out. However his bed is about 3 inches off the floor anyway. I had a gate on his bedroom door and everything in the room is baby-proofed so i feel that he is safe in the room.

My dad thinks its too early but my mum doesn't. Maybe i should just give it another while before deciding one way or another.

Give it a while and see. His environment is safe - that is the main thing. DS1 went into a bed at around 13 months because he hated his cot. He was fine. Ds2 stayed in his cot till he was over 2 because he liked it and didn't want to come out. He was fine too.

I think it depends on the child and the reason for moving them........if they can climb out of the cot then they risk hurting themselves and would be better off in a bed. Personally though, my DD1 will be 2 tomorrow and I intend to keep her in the cot as long as possible! I know she'd be a nightmare about staying in a bed, and would never nap in the day again if she was able to get herself back up............she's better off behind bars

heth i do see what you mean...it was a nightmare to get him to go for a nap yesterday.

He goes to creche 3 days a week whilst i work and there they nap on little mattresses and he has done this since he moved to the toddler room. They say they have no problems with him so i'm hoping he will come round

We had this with DD when we moved her at about the same age. twice she got up in the night and we just put her back to bed saying it was time to sleep - naps were more of a challenge and it took about a week of no eye contact and putting her back to bed etc (had to stand outside her door, out of her sight and use to go in as soon as her feet hit the floor) - the first day took almost 2 hours for her to go to sleep and just over an hour the 2nd day, then i was just putting her back 2 or 3 times and now she doesn't move from her bed, just shouts when she wakes up!
