Is it OK to smack someone else's kids if they misbehave?

I realise there'll be some people on here who probably don't agree with smacking other people's kids but what if they are in your care and are misbehaving or being cheeky? Do you think it's OK then to just give them a smack on the bum or the hand or do you think you should wait until their parents arrive so that they can smack them?

OP- just because you do it (and I don't challenge that, it's your choice and you'll end up paying DCs therapist in 20-odd years), it doesn't mean everyone else does. have the decency to respect other people's choices as much as you expect other people to respect your choice.

I would kill (and happily go to jail) if someone was to raise a finger on DS whilst taking care of him.

ApplesinmyPocket · 07/03/2010 22:54

Of course it isn't OK to smack someone else's children. No. Not Ever.

"Do you think it's OK then to just give them a smack on the bum or the hand or do you think you should wait until their parents arrive so that they can smack them?"

This is very oddly phrased. I wouldn't be waiting with bated breath for any smacking at all.

teamcullen · 07/03/2010 22:54

OP would it depend on if the children were on a sugar rush, bouncing off the walls because they had just had skittles for first time?

No... That wouldnt stand up in a court of law!

2shoes · 07/03/2010 22:55

in answer to the op NO
if you do.... you can expect a very angry parent to smack you

Confuzled · 07/03/2010 22:55

Washing their mouths out with soap occasionally is also effective. (Of course, some parents are all PC-gone-mad do-gooder loonies, but mark my words, they'll be sorry when their brats are pregnant drug-addled joyriders, and yours is a pillar of the community.)

Nothing wrong with a bit of good old-fashioned fear, when raising children. Just as long as you never smack in anger.

midnightsbrokentoll · 07/03/2010 22:56

How is it illegal to discipline a child?

Confuzled · 07/03/2010 23:10

midnightsbrokentoll - the defence of reasonable chastisement only applies to parents or those acting as parents, not to paid carers or the general public. Raise your hand to adult or child without that defence and it's common assault, which is a crime.

tethersend · 07/03/2010 23:15

You can physically discipline your own children, midnightsbrokentoll, but not someone else's.

tethersend · 07/03/2010 23:15

Or just read what confuzzled says, because it's a far better answer than mine.

interesting!
I would NOW say no, never.

But 10 odd years ago when I was au pairing in Italy to twin 2yo boys, I was told off by a relative of the boys for not smacking them when they misbehaved. There, it was expected that the "help" would chastise the DC appropriately, and as far as the rellies were concerned, smacking WAS appropriate.

I'd go ape if someone smacked DS though..

Why don't you clear out the cupboard under the stairs and tell them they have to have that as their bedroom instead? Then when they are naughty you can shut them in there. Avoids smacking, shades of Harry Potter, ticks all the boxes. If you are feeling generous you can leave them a candle and a box of matches ...

midnightsbrokentoll · 07/03/2010 23:31

Spot on Quattrocento, apart from the lighting scheme.

Valpollicella · 07/03/2010 23:31

SuperSmartMum

Whisper it -but I smack my kids. Not that hard and not that often but I smack them

So what's the point then, if it's 'not that hard'? A pre-warning to the harder smacks?

Oh and nice Op, and one (maybe two?) posts after and run...

Confuzled · 07/03/2010 23:32

...and tidbits to tame the rats?

Confuzled · 07/03/2010 23:34

Oops, that was to Quattrocento. Rather random in X posted isolation.

Valpollicella · 07/03/2010 23:34

Ha, now you have given yourself away as a bit of a twat troll odd person midnightsbrokentoll

electra · 07/03/2010 23:36

No way

midnightsbrokentoll · 07/03/2010 23:38

Damn, Damn Damn - back to the bridge.

YanknCock · 07/03/2010 23:41

I'd just give them gin so they'd be too sleepy to misbehave. Problem solved. HTH

intercoursethepenguin · 07/03/2010 23:46

If the gin dont work a nice glass of rum might do the trick
