Frienships/playing with others

My DS is 4 aand has been attending preschool since Sep. He has not made any 'friends' and was decribed by his teacher as solitary. He is not shy but my perception is that he does not know how to make friends/interact with others and does not seem to show any interest in doing so.

I am not expecting that he makes loads of friends but I guess I would have hoped that he would be able to hang around with some girls/boys whilst at nursery.

Background - we are reasonably new to the area and sadly find it diifcult to meet other families etc. so I guess he does not have much experience of playing with other children. He has a little sister but he is a bit hit and miss with her when it comes to playing together.

Am I worrying too much? or is there anything I can do to help him. BTW he is generally fine about going to preschool each day.

All thoughts appreciated.

I wonder the same about mt DD sometimes, she is 3 and really doesn't seem that interested in other children. They don't seem concerned though at nursery.
Does your DS seem otherwise quite happy and settled?

I don't think it is particularly abnormal for a boy to be fairly uninterested in playing with other children at 4. He should be happy to play alongside other children, though, and willing to participate in activities with others if asked. My ds1 didn't play with other children at pre-school, but appeared to be aware of all their names and what they'd been up to that morning! Are there any other behaviours that worry you about your ds, or is it simply his lack of interest in playing with other children at pre-school?

Is there any way you could engineer a play-date with one of the children(plus parent in tow if you don't know them well), so that he gets the opportunity to get to know someone a bit better on a one-to-one basis? His teacher might be able to recommend a child/parent combination that might be sympathetic and you could write them a little note inviting them!!!

Thanks all for your thoughts.

He generally is fine about going to preschool. (We do get some mornings where he says he wants to stay at home but hey I am sure they all say that from time to time). I don't think I am very worried about it (perhaps a little given that I have posted on here!) and of course your commments help to put things into perspective.

I have a catch up soon with his teacher so I will learn more and perhaps try to arrange some sort of playdate.
